1. WHAT'S NEW IN POWERPCB 3.5
==============================
This release includes the initial release of BlazeRouter, a new autoro uting product developed by PADS Software, Inc. BlazeRouter is the firs t application developed on
PADS's Latium platform, a new technology environment for advanced desi gn automation
products. PowerPCB 3.5 also includes a CAM350 interface and enhancemen ts to attributes.
1.1 BlazeRouter
-----------------
PADS's BlazeRouter offers high completion rates and fully-integrated t est engineering support using fewer layers and requiring minimal post- route cleanup. The first true autorouter for both multilayer PCBs and advanced packages, BlazeRouter uses native any-angle and diagonal rout ing algorithms, driven by Intelli-Route Controls, to accurately and ef ficiently produce high-density circuitry. This is the first solution t o be delivered on PADS抯 new Latium architecture, a computer-integrate d design (CID)platform for fully-integrated interconnect design and In ternet support.
1.2 CAM350 Interface
------------------------
PADS's CAM350 interface provides direct integration between engineerin g and fabrication. Designers can now directly output CAM350 data from PowerPCB. Any issues discovered by the CAM engineer can be automatical ly highlighted within PowerPCB using Verify Design and the fabricator抯 CAM350 files. CAM350 enables engineering departments to communicate m ore accurately, reducing design iterations.
1.3 Attribute Enhancements
----------------------------------------
First introduced in PowerPCB 3.0, attributes are significantly enhance d for PowerPCB 3.5. Access flags are included to give you additional a ttribute controls. These flags include read-only, system, and Hidden. A "keep exact" format is also included to ensure consistency of attrib ute values between PowerPCB and other software applications, such as s chematic packages. You also have more control of the placement and app earance of attribute labels.
1.4 Visual Basic Script Wizard
-------------------------------
A wizard-based Visual Basic script generator is available, allowing yo u to take advantage of PowerPCB's Automation methods, even if you have limited programming expertise.
1.5 FLEXlm 6.1G Security
-------------------------
Security now uses version 6.1g of FLEXlm.
1.6 Acrobat Reader 4.0
-------------------------
PowerPCB 3.5 includes Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 for viewing and printin g PDF files (including the PowerPCB user's guides and the BlazeRouter Concepts Guide).
2. INSTALLATION NOTES
======================
2.1 About Security
-------------------
PowerPCB uses a new version of security, FLEXlm 6.1G. To ensure you re ceive the latest security, PowerPCB automatically installs security wh en it is newer than existing security, unless you perform a Custom ins tallation and turn security off. PADS recommends that you install secu rity since only older files are updated.
Security for PowerPCB is now installed locally, meaning that all secur ity files and information for PowerPCB are installed within the \padsp wr directory structure. PADS strongly recommends that you use this def ault location: do not install security for PowerPCB 3.5 to the c:\flex lm directory. By doing so, you ensure that PowerPCB 3.5 security will not interfere with other program's security that use FLEXlm and vice-v ersa.
This new version of security contains several enhancements and feature s. For more information on these updates, see the updated FLEXlm docum ent available in the \Flexdoc\Enduser directory on the distribution CD . These documents are in HTML format; you can view them using any Web browser.
2.2 Help on Installation
-------------------------
Press F1 during installation for complete Help on the installation and security setup process. You can also access Help prior to installatio n by clicking Help on the Autorun screen that appears when you insert the CD into the CD drive.
To troubleshoot security issues, open install.hlp, choose the Index ta b, type "Troubleshooting", and go to "Troubleshooting FLEXlm Security" . The help file can be found on the CD or in the \padspwr\PowerPCB dir ectory after the software is installed.
2.3 Installation and Security Requirements
-------------------------------------------
- For Windows NT users, you must have administrator
priveledges on your system to install PowerPCB.
- Install SPECCTRA before installing PowerPCB. Do not install
it to the PowerPCB directory.
- Do not install security to c:\flexlm. Use the default
location, in the \padspwr directory.
- Disable virus shields and screen savers before installing.
- For floating security users only, install the NETBEUI or
IPX/SPX protocols and install TCP/IP on all security clients.
- The installation process will not overwrite psidaemon if
it is running. You must shut down the floating security
server, psidaemon, before installing security for PowerPCB.
2.4 Floating Security Server Requirements
------------------------------------------
- This information applies to the current version of FLEXlm
floating security. For the security server, you do not need
to install IPX/SPX or NETBEUI. The only communication
protocol necessary for running PADS floating security is TCP/IP.
- The floating security server does not need to be a network
server. You can use any system on a network as the security
server, including a network server, if you prefer. You cannot,
however, use a Novell server as the security server.
- The floating security server must have a static IP address.
FLEXlm lmgrd does not support DHCP, or dynamic IP addresses.
- Shut down the floating security service before installing
floating security on the server.
2.5 About License Files
------------------------
If you are upgrading from PowerPCB 2.x, you need to install a new lice nse file. The version 2.x license file will not work with version 3.x. See the "License File Updates" note below for more information. Licen se files are automatically installed for new users.
- License File Updates
PowerPCB 3.5 uses a new license file, named pcblic.dat. The PowerPCB 3 .5 license file is installed to the c:\padspwr\security\licenses direc tory by default. You can choose to install the new license file during installation of PowerPCB, or you can install the license file separat ely, using the License File Update utility. To use this utility, choos e Install License from the Autorun screen that appears when you insert the PowerPCB CD in the appropriate drive. See the "License File Updat e Utility" topic in the Installation and Security Help for more inform ation.
- License File Environment Variable
A new license environmental variable called PADS_LIC_FILE is now used by PowerPCB 3.5. This makes installing multiple versions of PowerPCB m uch easier to manage in this release and in the future.
- PowerPCB 3.5 was developed for use on Windows 98 and Windows
NT 4.0.
- PowerPCB 3.5 is available on CD only.
2.6 Starting BlazeRouter and License Files
--------------------------------------------
- BlazeRouter uses the same version of FLEXlm as PowerPCB 3.5.
The new license file installed by PowerPCB 3.5 includes all
the necessary feature lines to enable BlazeRouter.
- BlazeRouter is accessed through a shortcut in the PowerPCB
program group.
- Portions of Microsoft Internet Explorer are installed with
BlazeRouter. This is not a full version of Internet Explorer
and it will not affect your current Web browser settings.
These files are used only for the BlazeRouter command window
and on-line help. These files are only installed when you
install BlazeRouter.
2.7 Using Multiple Versions of PowerPCB and SPECCTRA
-----------------------------------------------------
To install PowerPCB 3.5 along with previous versions of PowerPCB, simp ly install PowerPCB 3.5 in a new directory. A new Program Group is cre ated, and the new license environmental variable ensures the correct l icense file is used.
