Introduction
============
The SPECCTRA Translator for Protel, Version 2.0, is a
bi-directional translator that converts printed circuit
board (PCB) designs between Protel and SPECCTRA.
The translator converts Protel Text files into SPECCTRA
design files and is intended to work with the Protel
Advanced PCB version 2.x. The translator can also be used
with EDA Client 3.x as long as the Protel PCB 2.8 ASCII
format is used.
Version 2.0 of the translator runs on Windows NT and
Windows 95.
Windows NT 3.51 requires Service Pack 5, which you can
downloaded from:
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes
/usa/NT351/ussp5/i386/SP5_351I.EXE
For non-usa versions of Windows NT, substitute the
version name for usa in the path. This file should be
copied to a temporary directory before uncompressing.
After the files are uncompressed, run update.exe.
These release notes are divided into the following
sections:
* What's New in this Release
* Known Bugs in this Release
* Installing the Translator on Windows Platforms
* Licensing Information
* Fixed Bugs
* Version 1.0 Release Notes
* Where to Find Translator Information
Additional information about design preparation and
how to use the translator is available in online
documentation, which you can view using the Acrobat Reader.
For information on using the Acrobat Reader, refer to the

==========================
What's New in this Release
==========================
* This translator now uses Softshare,the standard Cadence
licensing software. Softshare is based on FLEXlm.
* The Cadence daemon cdslmd replaces the daemon PCBDA.
* Node-lock licensing requires SoftShare support.
* The menu command File > License File has been removed. You
can no longer specify a license file using the File menu.
* The translator executable names have been changed. The
Protel to SPECCTRA translator is now pro2sp (it was
protl2sp), and the SPECCTRA to Protel translator is now
sp2pro (it was sp2protl). In the translator manual, the
installation chapter uses the new names. The other chapters
are not corrected and use the old names.
==========================
Known Bugs in this Release
==========================
* Some first time users can encounter a runtime error when
running the Protel to SPECCTRA translator (pro2sp.exe).
The work around for this problem is to start the SPECCTRA
to Protel translator (sp2pro.exe) and click the Exit button.
This should remove the runtime error in pro2sp.exe.
==============================================
Installing the Translator on Windows Platforms
==============================================
The translator consists of several files that are supplied on
CD-ROM or through the Cadence SourceLink web site.
This section provides installation procedures and includes
the following topics:

and Configuration Guide for this procedure.
* If you are using floating licensing and a SoftShare
server is already installed and configured, you need to
know the location (port at machine name) of the
license server.
Installing the translator on a Windows platform involves
running the setup program. This program creates the
following directory tree:
<install_dir>\tools\specctra\protel_if\<subdirectories>
and installs the software in the subdirectories.
The default <install_dir> is C:\cct_cds. The setup program
creates this directory if it does not already exist. You can
choose a different installation directory if you do not want to
use the default directory.
The subdirectories and installed files are shown in the

==========
Fixed Bugs
==========
The following sections list fixed bugs for several versions of this
translator.
Version 1.0.7
=============
* SPECCTRA and Protel calculate component rotation angles differently.
Certain components are now rotated an extra 180 degrees to make up
for this.
Version 1.0.6
=============
* Run-time error '424' in the GUI of the SPECCTRA to
Protel translator has been fixed.
Version 1.0.5
=============
* Component names with special characters are new
quoted in the design file.
* Area fills within individual component images are now
translated.
* Component outlines in the design file are now
generated using the Protel max/min component
definition. Previously, component outlines were
generated using the pin locations.
* Arcs in Protel are now translated into the design
file.
Version 1.0.4
=============
* The translator now uses default filenames. When
translating from Protel to SPECCTRA, the translator
defaults the design file to have the same
base name as the Protel PCB file. When translating from
SPECCTRA to Protel, the translator defaults the
session, netlist, and pick and place files to the same
base name as the original Protel PCB file. The session
file is only set if it exists.
Version 1.0.3
=============
* The translator now supports the new placement
features found in version 7.0 of SPECCTRA. These
features include: changing of net pin assignments,
changing a component images,and adding and deleting of
components. Use the force include placement switch in
SPECCTRA when saving a session file with this
information. If you have added components in SPECCTRA
not found in the Advanced PCB library, you must add
them to the library before loading the netlist file. Do
this by selecting Components from the Library menu
within Advanced PCB. Then press Add All Components.
* The translator will generate a Netlist file during
translation from SPECCTRA to Protel,if any of the
netlist features are used in SPECCTRA. The Netlist file
should be loaded into advanced PCB before the Pick and
Place file. When loading the Netlist file, set all
options to true. Choose Reset Origin from the Edit menu
before loading the Pick and Place file.
* SPECCTRA component outlines are now defined using the
Protel Max component outline.
* An error message is displayed to the user if a
component has no name.
* Free arcs are now translated to SPECCTRA.
* Multiple components that have the same image now use
the same SPECCTRA image library definition. Therefore,
exploded components are not translate properly. If you
want to modify only a specific component instance
(explode a component), you must create a separate
image.
Version 1.0.2
=============
* Version 1.0.1 of the translator contained a bug in
the security key driver that would not allow the
translator to run on processors over 120 MHz. Version
1.0.2 supports processors up to 200 MHz.
=========================
Version 1.0 Release Notes
=========================
These release notes contain the following information:
* What Doesn't Translate
* How to Resolve Problems
* Known Bugs
What Doesn't Translate
======================
The following Protel features do not translate into SPECCTRA:
* Split power planes
* Blind and buried vias
* Text on copper layers
* Arcs
* Component tracks, vias, and fills
* Parenthesis are illegal characters in component designator and
component patterns.
* Spaces are illegal characters in net names, component and pin
designators, and component patterns.
How to Resolve Problems
=======================
The following list identifies problems and suggests actions you
can take to resolve them.
* Problem: Text on copper trace layers does not translate into
SPECCTRA.
Action: Place keepouts over the text in Protel.
* Problem: The placement data is offset from the other data in
the PCB display when you load the pick and place file (.pik)
created by sp2protl into Protel.
Action: Before you load the translated pick and place file,
reset the PCB origin in Protel. Do this by clicking
Edit-Reset Origin.
* Problem: Components might be incorrectly rotated after loading
the pick and place file (.pik) created by sp2protl into Protel,
due to a Protel limitation when using placement rotations other
than 45 degree increments.
Action: Loading the translated pick and place file into Protel
three times gives accurate rotations if all components were
rotated in 45 degree increments.
* Problem: SPECCTRA routes over free pads placed in Protel
and not associated with a net, when starting SPECCTRA with the
SPECCTRA session file.
* Action: Instead of loading the session file for further work in
SPECCTRA, load the SPECCTRA design file, and then the SPECCTRA
placement file or routes file.
Known Bugs
==========
* Fonts might appear too large.
* The Stop Translation button is not functional.
=========================
