The Lyrid meteor shower is approaching. The best time to view the show er will be the evening of April 21st and morning of April 22nd.
The best way to view a meteor shower is to get a blanket or lounge and just look UP! The meteors will appear anywhere and everywhere in the sky. You do NOT use binoculars or a telescope to view a meteor shower.
Meteors are actually the light that is produced when a meteoroid enter s the Earth's atmosphere at a high rate of speed, super heats, and bur ns up. Therefore, a meteoroid is a small rock or grain of sand that is floati ng in space. A meteor is the light that is produced when that meteoroi d enters our atmosphere. A meteorite is what hits the ground if the me teoroid does not burn up on entry. Many people have thought they found a meteorite, but after analysis, it turned out to be just a rock. Thi s is known as a "meteor-wrong"! (Sorry, a little astronomy humor there ).
If you want to take pictures of the meteor shower, it is VERY easy to do. All you need is a camera that will allow you to do time exposures by locking open the shutter. Set the camera on a tripod, load it with 400
speed film, point the camera towards Lyra (see the chart on the web si te), use a shutter release, open the shutter for about 5-10 minutes per exposure. If there are any meteors in the field of view, they will be
recorded on the film as streak running across the film. It is very rewarding the first time you catch one on film!! Don't be afraid to experiment....
