dear slowhorse (小林),
young friend, pls read the following:
the TSE ( test of spoken english ) is strictly a
test of spoken english ability. all overseas students
who wish to apply to universities in the US are required
to take this test.
the entire test lasts an average of one hour.
although the actual testing time is just 20 minutes. the
candidate's answers are recorded onto a tape.
the TSE is divided into seven sections: (1)the candi-
date is asked basic questions and is given 15 seconds to
answer. (2)the candidate reads a printed passage in
silence for one minute, then is given one minute to read
it out loud. (3)the candidate studies a group of in-
complete sentences and is given 10 seconds to finish each
sentence with his or her own words. (4)the candidate
looks at a series of pictures which form a story and has
one minute to summarize the story. (5)the candidate
examines a picture and has one minute to answer four ques-
tions about it. (6)the candidate is given 45 seconds to
describe a situation or given an opinion on a subject of
international importance. (7)the candidate examines a
memo or notice printed on a brochure, then has one minute
to explain the memo or notice.
young friend, one important thing is that you have
to practice a lot. which means whenever and wherever
possible.
Just speak and speak. you can speak everything and
you can speak to yourself. speak about the scene, about
the things happened to you, or about your own feeling.
speak out louder and form this habit. this is the most
important thing, in this way, you can form your way of
thinking in English, which is called english mentality.
another, you have to read some formal materials-----
new concept english(2) is a good one. you can recite
it. this book contains nearly every words which are
most likely to be used in everyday english. well, you
can record the teacher's "lecture" and listen to it and
repeat. it is also very helpful to both your pronunci-
ation and your mentality.
finally, if u wanna take TSE and get enough score,
you had better spend an hour a day in reading easy eng-
lish and practice your spoken english whenever and wher-
ever possible.
at last, you must pray for good luck. if your eng-
lish proficiency is fairly well and you have good luck,
you will succeed. If you fail, i think your endeavor is
still very helpful for your spoken english.
with best wishes! urs mmlydia(lydia)
