Kobe: How are you doing?
Rick: Well I'm doing great, and I do appreciate your calling in, and we will go ahead and commentate things, and I know it's a game day for you, and I kept telling people, I said "look, Kobe is a man of his words, he's gonna call in here."
Kobe: Oh no doubt
Rick: And I appreciate your doing that. Congratulations on the MVP, and especially, Kobe, I was so impressed with the classy way that you handled what I thought was just a ***** behavior on the part of the fans there. how difficult was it for you to have to deal with being booed by fans from the city that you lived in?
Kobe: Ah no it was heartbreak, it was fun being there. It was fun playing the game, and being around the fellows, and I wasn't gonna let that damn moment, you know, ruin the good time that I had that weekend.
Rick: Well, I really thought you did a tremendous job in dealing with that, and really, i gues because last year, you know how fans are, when you told them, and justifiably selling the playoffs, you told them you were gonna rip the fans' heart out in the playoffs and you went out and did that. So, I guess you'll have to pay a price for that when you say things like that.
Kobe: Yeah you know what, it's funny because, grown up in Philadelphia, that's the attitude you grow up with. You know, playing competitive basketball, or playing sports, that's the attitude you have to have. You have to have competitive instinct, and, i just carry, i just have being carrying that attitude with me my whole entire NBA career.
Rick: And that's why I was disappointed, cuz the fan should realize that, know that when they are there they wanna crash the opponent, they would, i think would appreciate the fact that you are such a competitor.
Kobe: Yeah well, you know, some people do, some people don't i guess.
Rick: Did the mayor actually call you to appologize?
Kobe: Yeah, Mayor_______ gave me a call the next day actually, right before practice, we talked for about 15 minutes.
Rick: You know, what goes on in your mind Kobe, when you have to go up against Michael Jordan and you hear all these comparasions between you two?
Kobe: Ah, just to win the game, you know, yesterday was a big game for us, because we won to start the second half of the season, or the season offed on the right foot, and you know, being down 20 points on the home floor, you know in a game that was, that has so much heights built around it, it was important for us to kinda come back and win the game, and it established some confidence among us, ourselves.
Rick: You basically took the team, and put the team on your shoulders in the game in the second half, and help spur them onto a victory against the wizards. When did you develope that type of a, such a winning, positive attitude?
Kobe: Well I've always been a very optimistic person. I've always been a confident person, but the more I've been in the league, I've been able to mature into a leader, so I can lead my team, to come back collectively. You know in the past I've always been able to do it individually, and that's not necessarily the best thing for the team. Now, being around so many great players that have been around to be able to learn from Michael, and Magic, and Jerry West. I've been able to spread that confident all to my teammates a little bit more, and we were successfully doing that the other night.
Rick: Kobe Bryant joining me here on the Rick Barry show, KNBR 680.
