5. Behaviour while in Japan
DO remember that as a travelling fan you are an ambassador for your country. The people of Japan will give you a warm and friendly welcome. In return respect their traditions and obey local laws. Loud or boisterous behaviour in public is less accepted than it is in the UK.
DO be aware that tattoos may cause offence. In Japanese culture tattoos are associated with criminals, so if you have tattoos do what you can to keep them out of sight.
DO beware of pickpockets and bag snatchers. Japan has a fairly low crime rate but big events attract criminals wherever they are held.
DO be aware of Japanese bar culture. Many bars in Japan only charge when you leave.
Alcohol can be very expensive in Japan so you could be faced with a nasty surprise if you do not pay attention to the prices on the menu and to how much you have ordered. There can also be cover charges.
DON’T take drugs. Japan takes an extremely tough line on all drugs. Do not under any circumstances consume drugs or bring them in to the country. Even small quantities of drugs for personal use can result in a prison sentence of several years. (Travellers to Japan should be aware that some Vicks Inhalers contain a substance, 1-desoxyephedrine, which is banned for use or possession under Japan's strictly enforced Anti-Stimulant Drugs Law. Vicks Inhalers purchased outside of Japan should not be brought into Japan.)
DON’T drink to excess. There will be no general prohibition of alcohol in the host cities, so enjoy the beer and the atmosphere in the local bars but drink in moderation.
DON’T drink and drive.
DON’T take your shirt off in public places. Exposed upper bodies may cause offence.
DON’T sleep in the streets or at unofficial camping sites.
DON’T smoke in prohibited areas such as public buildings, railway stations, buses and trains. There may be designated places for smokers in some buildings and stations.
DON’T tip. Tips are not necessary anywhere, even at hotels and restaurants. Tipping may cause confusion.
