The Guitar Times:
What music do you listen to?
Now, I am listening to piano music, chamber music...
Just because they have such a fabulous repertoire. Although the piano is very different from the guitar, there is a kind of relationship, there are certain interpretative techniques that we can use. Whereas it is much more difficult for us to use what the violinist or the cellist, or the singer does.
When I travel, I often hear many guitar concerts, because often I'm in a festival and I need to listen to my friends and colleagues, so I go to hear everyone else. When we go in a city, me and my wife, we go to concerts. It depends what's on... I'm pretty omnivorous. I will take what comes, and I enjoy everything.
I don't really like Rock music, I have nothing against it, I used to go to Rock concerts with my friends in London, but I don't go now, really. If I sit in the car, I tend to listen to older folk music or classical music. That's what I enjoy most, what I have always enjoyed.
If I'm making a record, or if I'm developing a programme that has one kind of orientation, I tend to listen to a lot of that kind of music. So, of course, last year I've listened to lots of Scottish and Irish music. It's to try to see how they did that music, and try to learn from them. But that is more like a professional endeavour, that's not as a music lover.
The Guitar Times:
Is there a special recording that is important for you?
It changes every year... I never used to listen to Beethoven's piano Sonatas, because it seemed kind of heavy, but now I've got this new stereo system and I put them on again, and it's fantastic. That was something I was almost blind to that now I'm enjoying.
Just now, I'm transcribing Baroque music for keyboard. So I bought all these records of Couperin, Rameau... I'm enjoying that kind of things.
I have some Dinu Lipatti records which are fantastic, I love listening to them -maybe in comparison to other pianists he might seem a little old-fashioned, but I really enjoy that.
Sometimes you listen to a record a lot, and it kind of dies on you, you stop liking it, or it's not special anymore.
I used to love Heifetz, the violinist, so I have lots of old records of Heifetz, in some ways it reminds me of my time living in London, I put it on once in a while, but I don't like to actually just sit and listen to it, I prefer some of my new records.
It's difficult for me to isolate, because it does change. Recently, I just got a record with a piece of Janacek called "Sinfonietta" which is fabulous. I put it on very often, but it will change -I will get fed up with it in six months.
