The Guitar Times:您如何看待您的文化背景?
What would you say is your cultural background?
David Russell:西班牙和英国。我出生于一个苏格兰家庭,但是我所受的教育全部是西班牙的。我的父母都是艺术家,在我非常小的时候,我们一家就乘坐有篷的货车到处旅行,那时我们住在Menorca。尽管如此,当你身处异国时总是会有一种自己是外来人的感觉。我可以讲一口非常流利的西班牙语和Menorca 本地话,但我依然是小镇上的外来户。
Spanish and British. Because my family are Scottish and all my education is Spanish. Both my parents are artists and we travelled around in a van from when I was very young, and we lived in Menorca. Although, when you live in another country you're always a foreigner. I don't look Spanish, even though I speak almost perfect Spanish and Menorcan, still I was the foreigner in the town we used to live in.
对于我来说,那种“我是一个西班牙人”的感觉几乎是不可能出现的,尽管我居住在西班牙,我的太太也是西班牙人。
And really, it's impossible for me to feel really Spanish, although I live there and my wife is Spanish. Simply because I've always been a foreigner there.
后来我来到了伦敦,当然伦敦是典型的英国文化,我必然也受到了这种文化的影响。我录制最新这张苏格兰音乐专辑的一个重要原因是我本人很喜欢这种风格,另外就是我的父母都是苏格兰人。
Then I went to London. So of course as London is British, I must have some influence from that.
The reason for me doing this Scottish music is partly because I enjoy that kind of music, and partly because my family is all Scottish.
The Guitar Times:你曾经学习过演奏其他的乐器(法国号和小提琴),你现在是否还演奏这些乐器?
You have studied other instruments (the French horn and the violin),
do you still play them?
David Russell:有时候我会拉一拉小提琴,法国号是一点都不去动了。号是一种非常难演奏的乐器,当我在参加音乐学院的入学考试时就是吹号,但是从内心来说,我是一名吉他手,后来我被录取了,并学习演奏号。我的法国号演奏水平不够好。在交响乐队中,由于并不需要很多的法国号演奏员,因此我从来没有能够在好的乐队中演奏,甚至我总是在最差劲的乐队中演奏。
Sometimes I pick up the violin... I don't play the horn anymore. Horn is a very difficult instrument to do, and when I did my exams to get into the academy I did it also on the horn, but at heart I was a guitarist, so they accepted me and I could study the horn. My level of playing the horn was not good enough. In the orchestras, you have few French horns so I was never going to be able to get into the good orchestras, or even the worst orchestras.
但是,我的小提琴演奏水平不错。而对于交响乐队来说,小提琴的位置也比较多,因此我可以坐在第二小提琴的后面,成为乐队的一部分。在英国,有很多由业余爱好者组成的交响乐队,我从来没有能够在专业的乐队中演奏,水平不够好。
But, with the violin, I was able to get in. Obviously, they have room for many more people and I was able to sit in the back of the second violins, and be part of an orchestra. And also, in England there are many amateur orchestras. I was never good enough to play in a professional one.
我也曾学过拉中提琴,中提琴的演奏对于吉他手来说相对比较容易。主要是我们的左手经常会磨出硬茧,而且中提琴的尺寸也要稍微大一点。另外中提琴所演奏的内容也比较容易。
I also learned to play the viola, because the viola for a guitarist is better. We usually have more callous on the left hand, and the viola is bigger. Also, the music you have to play is easier.
在中提琴声部中,即使你拉得不是很好,也可以与乐队进行合作。另外,由于乐队总是没有足够多的中提琴手,所以他们总是拼命寻找拉中提琴的人。像我这样水平的人,就可以在一个业余管弦乐队中演奏中提琴。
Not always, but you can sit and play the viola in a Beethoven symphony, whereas if you were to play the first violin you would have to be pretty good. With the viola part, you can play with the orchestra without being so good. And also, orchestras are desperate to have viola players because they don't have enough. So for me playing the viola was a way of being part of the amateur orchestras.
当吉他演奏者演奏时,声音是一开始就结束了。而在小提琴上,你演奏一个音符,这个音符可以持续相当长的时间,这个音符就是一个活的交流。我认为这会给你可以表现旋律的完全不同的方式,这种方式与吉他的方式是完全不同的,但是在某些时候我可以让两者发生一些关联。
Playing an instrument that is a continuous note is perhaps an education. When the guitarists play, the note starts and dies. On the violin, you manipulate the note, you make it all the time. So, your note is an active engagement, the whole of it. I think it gives you a a different view on how to create melodies. It's very different of course from the guitar, but something I was able to relate.
小提琴演奏者会花很大精力去考虑如何使用颤音,如何学习颤音。音调(intonation)对于他们来说是非常重要的,而且他们无时无刻不在使用音调。对于这些,我有时也会在吉他上使用。
The violinists think so much about how you use vibrato, how to learn vibrato. The intonation is much more important for them, as they use intonation all the time. So some of these things, of course, I can use on the guitar.
我也想,即使是在一个水平不高的乐队中演奏,也是一种很有趣的经历,只要不坐在观众的位置去听就好。
I think also, just playing in an orchestra is an experience of great fun, even at the low level, and not only listen to it from outside.
但是我并不清楚这对于我作为一个吉他演奏家来说有多大的帮助。我建议所有的学生都去学习一种可以持续发音的乐器,一种旋律乐器。这是很有趣的。
But I don't know really how much this has helped me as a guitarist. I would advise all students to learn an instrument that is a continuous note, a melodic instrument, so they can relate to that. It's just interesting.
