the G u i t a r Times
made this interview in Bern
in November 1998
(David Russell was giving a master-class)
The Guitar Times:
First, would you tell us about your rhythm of life? Do you give a lot of master-classes?
David Russell:
I do quite a lot of master-classes, but usually connected with one or some concerts. Maybe half of the concerts are at a University or a teaching institute and they need to have the master-classes as well to make it good for their students.
And it's fun, because I don't teach anywhere...
I have no proper job!
Master-classes for me are good fun, and it's nice to have contact with the younger players that are getting good... I see what's happening.
But my general life the last few years has been maybe nine months travelling -and not enough at home- , but slowly with my wife we're changing that a little bit, and hopefully next year I'm going to cut down on the master-classes. I love doing them but they take up a lot of time and they're very tiring sometimes. Here it's fantastic because everything is very well organised but sometimes it takes up all day, and it kills me -I can't do any practice myself.
And really I still feel that I'm a concert player and sometimes I teach. Not a teacher that sometimes plays concerts, so since I'm lucky enough to have the opportunity to play concerts, I want to continue.
So I go home as often as possible, even if it's just for one day. I don't like to join too many things together, and be away for three or four weeks. I would prefer to go home for one day and then go to the next place. It just gives me a little bit of a feeling that I have a home. Hotels are great but sometimes you need to be at your place.
The good side of this is that, as a young guitarist, I studied hard and I wanted to play concerts, so I'm doing exactly what I had planned to do. Also I'm lucky that my wife travels ninety or ninety-five per-cent of the time with me, so we have a good, normal relationship. |
