Requirements Specification Inspection Checklist
Completeness
1. Is any additional information needed such that a proposed solution to each described problem can be identified.
2. Has justification (business, technical, cost, etc.) been provided for each proposed requirement.
3. Have inputs into the requirements specification been clearly identified.
4. Have non-objectives been clearly separated from project goals.
5. Have the major Business Operation Characteristics such as organizational definition, volume estimates, environment, staffing, business cycle, integration considerations, and failure point analysis been documented for the proposed business environment/workflow.
6. Have the major System Characteristics (non-functional requirements) such modifiability, portability, security, usability, testability, reliability, robustness, control, audit requirements, availability, archive needs, and disaster contingency plans been included in the specification.
7. Have discretionary versus non-discretionary requirements been identified.
8. Have both existing and proposed environments been defined.
9. Has the process for managing changes to the requirements been specified.
Clarity
1. Is the specification clear and easy to follow.
2. Is there only a single interpretation and meaning of each specified item.
3. Are the key terms and acronyms defined so as to avoid guessing their meaning.
Feasibility
1. Have the requirements been written in such a manner as to make it easy to test and demonstrate satisfaction of each.
2. Can solutions be implemented with the available methods, tools and resources and within the specified schedule and cost constraints.
3. Are the known limitations identified.
4. Have specific support needs (training, technical, documentation, etc.) been identified.
5. Are normal and special verification/certification activities defined.
6. Is there a specific release strategy that this project must satisfy.
7. Are measures of success defined and expressed in measurable/quantifiable terms.
8. Is the priority of each requirement identified.
Consistency
1. Does any item in the specification directly conflict with another.
2. Is the information provided with each item pertinent to that problem and its proposed solution.
Manageability
1. Is there separation of problem statements such that changes to one item does not have unreasonable impacts on others.
2. Are there dependencies and impacts beyond the scope of this project.
