The main map of King's
Background
King's College London was established by King George IV in 1829 and became one of the founding colleges of the University of London. It is now a multi-faculty institution with some 16,200 students occupying a leading position in higher education in the UK and enjoying a world-wide reputation for teaching and research.
King's was established next to Somerset House on land granted in perpetuity by the Crown, and this Strand campus is still the College's main site, in the heart of London, close to the seat of Government, the City, the Royal Courts of Justice and the Inns of Court.
English Centre
King's College boasts a long tradition of teaching English to international students dating back to the mid-1930s. In 1987 the English Language Centre (ELC) was established as a department within the School of Humanities and has since grown considerably in terms of both its staff/student body as well as the types and variety of its courses. Today, the Centre prides itself on being a highly professional department that delivers courses of the highest quality via experienced and committed teachers.
We offer tuition in General English (EFL/ESL) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses throughout the year, as well as a Pre-sessional course during the summer that is accredited by BALEAP (the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes). In addition, we service the English language needs of various external commercial, legal and other institutions by designing and teaching tailor-made courses. The ELC has founded and established a highly successful and innovative MA in ELT & Applied Linguistics and has been instrumental in establishing the Institute for Applied Language Studies under whose auspices it is now taught. We are also very actively involved in language teacher training/education, running both the RSA/Cambridge DELTA and a range of pre- and in-service training courses for native and overseas teachers. Moreover, we are a thriving centre for Cultural Studies, collaborating with the British Council and with other universities and colleges world-wide, and publishing extensively in the field.
