8. to read between the lines：意思是從字裡行間體會隱含的意義；領會言外之意或能瞭解其中的真正意義（to interprete the hidden meaning or a hidden message; to discern the true fact）假如說：
I can read between the lines，就是我瞭解 message 裡的真正意義。
As you look at this poem, be sure to read between the lines. (你看這首詩時，要從字裡行間去體會其涵義。)
After he re-read the love letter between the lines, he realized that he was dumped by his sweetheart. (當他細讀情書後，他領會到被情人遺棄。)
9. to let off steam：意思是洩怒、出氣，也就是發洩壓抑的感情，像放掉蒸氣（steam）以減少壓力似的。這與“to fly off the handle”意思相似，但比“to lose temper”較為委婉客氣些。例如：
What will you do if your wife lets off steam?（假如你太座發脾氣，你怎麼辦呢？)
(因為談及對方的太太，所以委婉客氣些)
但是談到第三者，就可不必太委婉，可用 lose temper:
What will you do if one of your staff lose temper?
Occasionally we should be given a chance to let off steam.（有時我們也應該有洩怒的機會）
10. to get on (one's) nerves: 意思是觸到某人的神經 (nerves) 而惹起心煩不高興或不耐煩。(to irritate or upset someone) 但還沒有達到“lose temper”的地步。例如：
Her constant gossip on trivial matters really gets on his nerves. (她經常為瑣事而論人是非令他厭煩)
It is not a good idea to get on your supervisor's nerves. (惹你上司不高興不是好辦法)
11. to pay through the nose: 是指花費太多，代價過高 (pay too much for something or excessively expensive) (這與 to cost an arm and a leg 意義相近) 例如：
Don't pay through the nose when you buy the furniture. (買家具時不必花費太多)
Some women paid through the noses for their jewelry. (有些女人購買珠寶飾物時，花費太多。)
12. to take center stage：意思是引人注目的中心人物；以某人為公眾矚目的對象（being in the spotlight）例如：
Mrs. Lin always takes center stage at a party. (林太太在宴會裡，總是令人注目。)
President Bush takes center stage wherever he goes. (布希總統不論到那裡，都是引人注目的。)
His constant taking center stage could deprive him of his privacy. (他常常出鋒頭可能會有損他的隱私權)
13. to drag（one's）feet：意思是慢慢的拖延，行動遲緩，拖拖拉拉（to procrastinate or postpone）例如：
It is not a good idea to drag your feet when the work needs to be done. (拖延需要完成的工作是不好的)
China feels that Taiwan is dragging its feet on reunification issue. (中國認為台灣在拖延統一問題)
No employers like for their employees to drag their feet on any project. (沒有雇主喜歡員工拖延任何計畫)
(動詞時態是：drag, dragged, dragging)
14. to paint（someone 或 oneself）into a corner：意思是使自己或某人陷入困境（to trap oneself or someone； to be in trouble）例如：
Don't try to paint yourself into a corner. (不可把自己陷入困境)
After a heated debate with his boss, Mr. Chen has painted himself into a corner. (經過與老闆激烈的辯論後，陳先生把自己陷入困境。)
He will paint his wife into a corner. (他將把太座陷入困境)
They have painted themselves into a corner. (注意：即使主詞是複數，corner 仍然用單數)
15. to ask (someone) for (one's) hand in marriage: 這是指男人請求女方家長允許與其女兒結婚 (to ask girl's parents for marriage approval)
(這裡的“someone”是指女方的家長，“one”是指女兒) 例如：
Mr. Su asked me for my daughter's hand in marriage. (蘇先生向我女兒求婚時，徵求我的同意。) (能尊重女方家長意見的男人，現在恐怕不多吧！)
或，
He has asked her parents for their daughter's hand in marrigae. (hand 只用單數) (他問她的父母是否同意與他們的女兒結婚)
如果父母同意，就是：
Her parents allowed their daughter to marry her boyfriend.
16. to move onward and upward：意思是步步高升，改進生活或往更好的情況前進。(to be promoted; from good to better situation) 例如：
He hopes to move onward and upward with his current company. (他希望在目前的公司裡能步步高升) (onward 意思是向前的；upward 是向上的)
Many young couples try to move onward and upward during their marriage. (許多年輕夫婦都想使婚姻更幸福)
17. to call a spade a spade: 意思是直言不諱，有啥說啥。(to be honest, blunt or frank) 例如：
My wife always calls a spade a spade about her work situation. (我內人對她的工作情況總是直言不諱)
Calling a spade a spade on foreign affairs sometimes seems difficult for diplomats. (外交官對國際事務似乎很難有啥說啥)
I believe in calling a spade a spade. (我信守老老實實，有啥說啥。)
