club:這個字當名詞,通常是俱樂部或高爾夫球棒;但當動詞用時,意思是用棍棒打人(to beat someone with a stick)。例如:
The security officer should not club any suspect who does not resist arrest. (安全人員對任何沒有拒捕的嫌犯不該用棒毆打。)
I saw the police clubbing a suspected robber. (我看到警察用棒子打擊搶劫嫌疑犯。)
When Mary insulted John, he clubbed her on her arm. (當Mary侮辱John時,他用棒子打她的臂部。)
10. soldier:當名詞用是士兵;當動詞用是指不顧困難,堅持下去(to forge ahead no matter what difficulty is) 例如:
They are going to be soldiering on across a minefield. (他們不顧一切,勇往直前,通過佈雷地區。)
The Marine Corps usually have to soldier on under the hardest conditions. (陸戰隊通常在最艱難的情況下,仍要勇敢前進。)
He will soldier on whatever may happen. (不管發生什麼事,他仍要繼續幹下去。)
(通常 soldier 後面用 on)
11. duck:當名詞用是鴨子;當動詞用是躲藏 (to hide) 例如:
Be sure to duck (yourself) under a safe place if necessary. (必要時你要躲在安全的地方)
When danger occurs, the first thing we need to do is to duck. (當危險發生時,第一件事我們要做的就是躲藏起來。)
12. chair:名詞是椅子或會議的主席(= chairman 或 chairwoman = chairperson);當動詞時,是擔任會議的主席(to be a chairperson)例如:
He has chaired a committee on international affairs.(他擔任國際事務委員會的主席)
One of my colleagues loves to chair several sub-committees on campus. (我的一位同事喜歡擔任學校裡幾個分會的主持人)
She will chair the math department next semester. (下學期她將擔任數學系主任)
13. doctor:名詞用是醫生、大夫(= physician);當動詞用是用藥治病或放藥物在飲料裡(to give medical treatment;or to put drug in one's drink)例如:
Someone tried to doctor her drink at the party. (宴會時,有人想把毒品放在她的飲料裡。)
(多指迷幻藥) (= to put some drug in her drink)
The mother was trying to doctor her children by using over-the-counter medication. (這位母親想買成藥給她孩子吃)
但是 to doctor the number = to cook the book 是做假帳(to make something fraudulent or false)
He tried to doctor the number before tax time. (他在報稅前設法做假帳)
People who doctor the numbers may end up in jail one day. (做假帳的人,有一天會坐牢的。)
(註:也有人用“to doctor the book”)
14. proposition:當名詞用是建議或主張;當動詞用是要求結婚或為某事而提議(to propose for marriage or suggest for something)例如:
The man regularly propositions his girlfriend for her hand in marriage. (這個人經常向他的女友求婚)
(= He proposes marriage to her.)(for her hand in marriage = ask her to marry him)
The city council will proposition the state government for funds. (市議會將向州政府提出預算要求)
注意:如果只說:“He propositions her.”通常是指要求做愛 (sex) 或
She was propositioned by her boss. (她的老闆向她提出非分要求)(指 sex)
15. cushion:名詞的意思是坐墊;當動詞時,是緩和或降低對某事的撞擊或震動(to soften or decrease impact of something)例如:
He cushions his transition into retirement by referring to himself as a lame duck.(他為了減少衝擊,在退休過程的轉移中,自稱為跛腳鴨。)
Taiwan has been cushioning its economic downfall by opening up a trade relation with China. (台灣為了緩和經濟的下降而與中國大陸開放貿易關係)
Nothing can cushion the sorrow of her mother's death. (什麼都不能減輕她對母親去世的悲傷)
16. cap:當名詞用,通常是便帽;當動詞用,是限額、約束或制止。(to limit something) 例如:
It is said that the Chinese government will cap the spending for military purposes. (據說中國政府將限制軍事的開支)
The new law has capped the crabbing season in our area. (新法令限制了本地區捕蟹的季節)(即不准隨時捕蟹)
Our school will cap the white student enrollment to promote its diversity programs. (本校為了提高種族的多元性,而約束白人學生的入學率)
17. showcase:做名詞用是陳列櫃;當動詞用是展覽或亮相。(to highlight) 例如:
The library is showcasing many rare items. ((圖書館展出許多稀有項目)
The U.S. has showcased its military hardware such as tanks, missiles and artillery. ((美國展示坦克、導彈、大砲等軍事裝備)
The real estate company is showcasing many new houses in the newspaper.(房地產公司在報紙上展示許多新房子)
