下面這些簡單的名詞,老外平時常常當做動詞用,雖然有點「枯燥」,但倒有實用的價值!
1.
table:當名詞用,是桌子。當動詞用,是指開會時延期討論提案等,也就是暫緩審議。(to postpone discussion of a bill or suggestion until future time); 例如:
They tabled the motion at the meeting.(motion 就是 suggestion 或 idea)
I made the motion and he seconded it.(我提案,他同意。) (second 的意思是贊成;to second the motion 也就是附議)
After I seconded the motion at the meeting, he tabled it.
We are tabling this matter until further notice.(我們延期討論這件事,以後再說。)
The issue has been tabled for months, but our position has not been changed.
(這個問題延期討論幾個月了,但我們立場仍然不變。)
2. pride:當名詞用,是榮譽;做動詞用,是指感到得意或自豪。這就是(to take pride in something)例如:
We prided ourselves on our good work. (我們為做好自己工作而得意)
I have long prided myself on being a good teacher. (我一向以身為好教師而自豪)
She prides herself on being a concert piano player. (她以能在演奏會彈鋼琴而得意)
Our university is prided itself on being a good neighbor within the city. (本校以能做市內的芳鄰感到欣慰)
注意:to pride oneself on,與 to be proud of 或 to take pride in 意思都相似,只是用法和後面所跟的介詞不同而已。例如:
Mr. Lee takes great pride in becoming an American citizen.
I am very proud of being a Chinese.
但如果說中國人因為 culture 和 heritage 的緣故,是個很自傲的民族,也可以說:
The Chinese are a proud people.
3. carpet: 這個字名詞是地毯;動詞的意思是覆蓋 (to cover something) 例如:
The flower girls carpeted the floor with rose petals before the bride's entrance. (新娘進來前,花童以玫瑰花瓣撒滿了地板。)
Many fans continued to carpet the movie star's grave with a variety of flowers. (許多影迷繼續在明星的墓前放滿了各式各樣的花)
During the winter time my roof is carpeted with white snow. (冬天時我家的屋頂蓋滿了白雪)
4. floor:當名詞用是地板;當動詞用是踩足汽車的油門踏板,加速開車或使人驚訝 (to press accelerator of a car to the floor in order to speed up;or to astonish someone) 例如:
As soon as I saw his gun, I floored my car. (一旦看到他有槍,我立即加速開車。)
When you see a police car, don't floor it. (當你看到警車時,別開快車。)
He floored his car in order to beat the traffic during the rush hours. (他開快車是想避免交通擁擠時間)
He has floored me when he said he had an affair with his secretary. (他說與他的祕書有染,令我驚訝。)
5. top:當名詞用是頂端;做動詞用是做得更好,或高過某人。 (to do something better or to be taller than someone) 例如:
If he had tried harder, he could have topped his class. (假如他以前用功些,他就會名列前茅。)
He thinks he can top it. (他想他會做得最好)(it 代表 anything)
The tax-cut issue will top today's agenda. (減稅問題將是今天主要議題)
Mr. Lin tops me by three inches. (林先生比我高出三吋)
6. flag:當名詞用是旗幟;當動詞用是指打旗號或做手勢,表示傳達訊息 (to give signal for communication) 例如:
When my car broke down, I flagged a police car. (當我汽車出毛病,我打信號招來一輛警車。) 或
A police car appeared and I flagged it down. (一部警車出現,我招手它停下。)
The beach life-guards usually flag one another for communication. (海濱救生員通常用旗號傳達訊息。)
7. ice:名詞是冰或冰塊;動詞是指比賽中勝過對方 (to win or to beat in competition) (多指體育競賽。) 例如:
Stanford University has iced University of Maryland in football game. (史大足球賽大勝馬大。)
Our school ices all the competitions in basketball. (本校籃球比賽屢戰屢勝。)
The swimming team members want to ice their rivals. (游泳隊的成員,想要勝過對手。)
8. bridge:當名詞用是橋樑或橋牌;當動詞用是連接或溝通 (to connect) 例如:
My purpose of writing articles is to bridge the cultural differences between Chinese and Americans. (我寫文章的目的是要消除中美人民文化的分歧。)
The parents are trying to bridge the generation gap with their children. (父母都在設法彌合與兒女的代溝。)
Before divorce parents should bridge their differences. (離婚前,父母應該彌補分歧。)
