Women were first accepted as regular members of the U.S. forces
in l942. The change was made largely because an increasing number of
jobs no longer involved combat. As women demonstrated ability to
perform a wide variety of assignments, the number of occupations open
to them gradually increased. Then, as now, they were barred from jobs
that would be likely to expose them to combat.
When the draft was eliminated in the l970s, and the all-
volunteer armed forces were introduced, more women were welcomed into
uniform. It was a perfect opportunity for women, as the generally
better qualified women volunteers filled an even larger selection of
military job specialties than before. Women were even allowed into
the military academies during this period.
But at this point, in the late 1970s and early 1980s,serious
controversy arose over women in the military. The issue of women in
combat became a political football, with members of Congress and
feminist groups pushing for the elimination of all restrictions on
women fill military jobs. Ever sensitive to congressional criticism,
the military complied with nearly every congressional suggestion
except allowing women into combat jobs.
