Ralph Ellison's Literary work the Invisible Man uses manipulation of time to illustrate the transformation of the narrator and his ability to gain self-knowledge. in this book, the time events are arranged into a circle, which contributes to the ocmpletence of the work.
the narration starts off with the statement i am an invisible man. traces back to the narrator's pre-invisible days. being black in the south teaches him to carry out his actions carefully. during college yers, he blindly believes the ideology of white is right. which is imposed on him by the faculty and family. the chronological sequence of events soon lead the readers to new york city. the narrator has been expelled from school. the time break in new york illustrates the narrator's transformation. soon he becomes less concerned with other people's ideology but more on finding his own values. he buys yams and eats them while walking on the street, which is not possible for him to do in south. however, he soon falls into the very same situation. the narrator is offered a desirable job at brotherhood. he is to believe the ideology of brotherhood and speak their minds to the people. during the dispute between he and the organization. jack tells him that brotherhood has hired him to speak, not to think. at this time the narrator comes to the realization that he has been dedicating to other's believes for life long. the dancing dolls with control strings on its back symbolizes the relationship between the narrator and brotherhood. he is controlled by the organization. when he escapes and gets trapped in a manhole, he burns his files including high school diploma. as he destroys these things that represents his identity. he ponder independently over his true self. he says the beginning starts at the end, implies that his turning invisible is the reborn of himself. the book ends in hs invisible state, bringing about his true voice in telling his story.
the time manupulation provides a relative stable view on the narrator's transformation. the narrator tells this story after everything has taken place instead of running through changes, presents two contrasting ediologies, contributes to the theme self-discovery of men of all races.
---- I never had a dream come true, until the day that I found
you. Even though I pretended that I moved on, you have
always been the one... I never found the words to say -
you're the one i think about each day. And i know that no
matter where love takes me to, a part of me will always be with you...
