The movie A Civil Action involves statistics in various places. The civil case was to investigate the mysterious death of 9 children in 15 years, possible cause leukemia. Leukemia may be caused by the water pollution. The number of death can be tested for its unusualness. A one-sample t test may be used to test how far away the probability of this number of death extends away from the significance level. An estimate of population standard deviation will be calculated from the sample. If such high probability of death is very not likely to occur by random variation, then the Leukemia death may have an association with water pollution. (Significance level of 0.05 is appropriate for this t test.)
The conversation between the lawyer and the witness also involves statistical concept. The lawyer mentioned the flipping of 100 coins. Some of them will head up and the rest will head down. This is a binomial distribution. The coin will either head up or head down. And the probability of heading up approximately equals the probability of heading down. In 100 trials, approximately 50 will head up and the rest head down (As the lawyer said.) this is an example of random variation. In this civil case, the number of children died of leukemia is excluded from random variation since the goal is to find out that water pollution causes the increase of sickness among the neighborhood.
Statistics contributes to the scientific and mathematical persuasiveness
---- I never had a dream come true, until the day that I found
you. Even though I pretended that I moved on, you have
always been the one... I never found the words to say -
you're the one i think about each day. And i know that no
matter where love takes me to, a part of me will always be with you...
