8. to put the screw (s) on (someone):意思是對某人施加壓力,或使某人難堪或強迫某人 (to give someone hard time or to be tough) 例如:
Don't put the screw(s) on Mr. Chen. (不要給陳先生太多的壓力。)
Republicans are putting the screw (s) on the Democrates. (共和黨給民主黨許多的難題。)
If he won't give you the money, you need to put the screw (s) on him. (如果他不還錢,你就得加些壓力。)
注意:也可以指真正 (physically) 把螺絲釘拴在機器上: 例如:
Please put the screw(s) in the machine.(或 on the top of the machine)
9. to make (someone) sick to (someone's) stomach:意思是使他人不高興或對某事的強烈反對(to make someone else feel bad or strongly against something)例如:
Mr. Wang's constant complaints make me sick to my stomach. (王先生時常埋怨令我厭煩。)
To euthanize unwanted pets has made his wife sick to her stomach. (對不要的寵物進行安樂死,令他老婆很惡心。) (euthanasia 是名詞)
但是,如果說:
I am sick to my stomach. (我是真正胃不舒服。)
10. to make a monkey out of (someone):意思是使人出醜或耍弄、欺騙別人(to make a fool of someone ) 例如:
Some telemarketers are making a monkey out of the elderly. (有些用電話推銷產品的人,故意耍弄或欺騙老人。)
The children always try to make a monkey out of the substitute teacher. (孩子們時常嘲弄代課老師。)
He realized that he had been made a monkey out of by his friend. (他體會到他被朋友耍弄。)
11. to rain on (someone's) parade:意思是使他人掃興,或對某人的熱誠潑冷水 (to ruin something; to destroy or dampen one's enthusiasm) 例如:
I hate to rain on your parade, but I just can not help you with your plan. (我不想對你的計畫潑冷水,但我不能幫你忙。)
She will not invite him to the party because she does not want for him to rain on her parade. (她不邀請他參加宴會,因為她不要他潑冷水。)
It is neither he nor I who rained on your parade. (使你掃興的,既不是他也不是我。)
12. to lift (one's) glasses high:指向某人敬酒 (to propose a toast to someone)(這與 to share 或 propose a toast 意思相似)例如:
On the special occasion, I always share a toast with my friend. (在特別的場合,我常向朋友舉杯敬酒。) (share 後的介詞多用 with)
Lift our glasses high in honor of all mothers. (讓我們舉杯向所有的母親敬酒。)
I lifted my glasses high to my relatives on New Year Day. (新年時我向親人舉杯敬酒。)
It is a fitting occasion to propose a toast to our teachers. (這是一個適當的場合向我們的老師敬酒。) (fitting = ideal 或 appropriate)
(propose 後面的介詞多用 to)
13. to call in a loan:這是要求別人立即還清借貸,多半指金錢或任何物品(want the loan back immediately, mostly refers to the money)例如:
My bank wants to call in my personal loan. (銀行要我把私人貸款立即還清。)
He called in a loan that I owed him. 其實,這裡的 loan 可指任何向人借出的東西 (anything you borrow) 例如:
Our library has called in a loan that are overdue. (圖書館通知歸還到期未還的借物。) (loan 指 all the books)
I borrowed a computer from him, and now he is calling in a (his)“loan.”(這裡的 loan 是指 computer)
14. to shut (one's) ears to (someone):意思是不聽他人的話或充耳不聞 (not listen to what others say; to ignore someone) (shut 的過去式及過去分詞也是 shut) 例如:
I tried to shut my ears to his words. (我對他的話,充耳不聞。)
When his wife talked to him, he shut his ears. 或
He shut his ears to his wife. (他不聽太座的話。)
但是:to shut (someone) out 就比較嚴重了。不但不聽,並且不相來往。(don't want to have contact with someone) 例如:
His angry son shut his father out. (生氣的兒子,不與父親往來。)
不過也可指真正被關在外面:例如:
She shut the door and locked him out.
