1 - Changes Since Release 7.2
The following changes have been made since the last release of Persona l Oracle7 for Windows 95:
• Oracle Navigator allows for creating and viewing Stored Progra m Units (Package Specifications, Package Bodies, Procedures, Functions and Triggers). The Oracle Navigator also enables users to print table s, views and snapshots, as well as drag and drop these objects into ap plications that accept tab-delimited data. In addition, the Oracle Nav igator features a new user interface for creating objects and more com prehensive context-sensitive help.
• In the Oracle Navigator, when you double-click a specific tabl e, the Index and Trigger folders appear, enabling you to create a new trigger or index or view an existing trigger or index on a specific ta ble. In the 7.2 release, double-clicking a table enables you to view t he table contents. In 7.3, to view the table contents, right-click the table and select Open.
• Required Support Files 7.0x for Windows 3.1 is no longer suppo rted with this release.
• SQL*NET TCP/IP 1.x is not supported against DBMS version 7.3.
• When the database is started, it does not automatically enable support for an incoming connection which allows for the distributed f eature two-phase commit. To enable this feature, from the Windows 95 t askbar, click the Start button and click Run. Type oraconct on and cli ck OK. To disable this feature, follow the same steps, but type oracon ct off.
2 - Additional Installation Instructions
2.1 - Installing on Compressed Drives
Only Windows 95 DriveSpace (drvspace.exe) is supported.
You can install Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95 to a compressed disk d rive. However, the Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95 Starter Database or any database that you may create, must be installed to a noncompresse d disk drive. In general, the Oracle7 DBMS does not support use of dis k compression software with database files. If you select either the A pplication Developer or the Runtime (Database Only) installation optio ns, you will be installing the Starter Database.
If you choose to install Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95 to a compress ed drive and you also select to install the Starter Database to a comp ressed drive, you will be asked to install the Starter
Database to a noncompressed disk drive of your choice. If you don't ha ve a noncompressed disk drive, you can also resize one of your compres sed drives to create noncompressed disk space.
If you need to resize a compressed drive, use the utility provided wit h the disk compression software. Adjust the free space allocated betwe en the compressed drive and the noncompressed host drive to gain enoug h noncompressed disk space on the host drive for the Starter Database. Then, specify the host drive as the noncompressed disk drive on which to install your Starter Database. Please refer to the disk compressio n utility's online help for more information on how to adjust free spa ce.
You will need 40 MB of noncompressed disk space if you want to install the Starter Database with support for symmetric replication. Otherwis e you will need 20 MB of noncompressed disk space.
Note: Use of symmetric replication (e.g., updatable snapshots) requir es that you also have access to an Oracle7 Server database configured for symmetric replication and appropriate access permissions.
2.2 - Connecting 16-bit Applications
Using Loopback to connect from 16-bit applications to the local Person al Oracle7 for Windows 95 database is not a supported function. Only l ocal connections may be made from 16-bit applications.
16-bit Windows applications require updated Oracle Required Support Fi les (RSF) to connect to Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95. This update i s necessary even if these applications are able to connect to Personal Oracle7 for Windows 3.1.
16-bit Windows applications previously required "2:" as the database n ame when connecting to Personal Oracle7 products. The update provided changes this behavior such that applications based on ORA71WIN.DLL, OR A72WIN.DLL, or ORA73WIN.DLL do not have to specify "2:" (it is now the default).
Provided with Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95 is a separate installati on that detects currently installed 16-bit Windows 3.1x RSFs and insta lls new ones. Run SETUP.EXE located in the \WINDOWS directory of your release media.
2.3 - Language Selection
The language you select when you install Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95 should match the language of the edition of Windows 95 that you are using. The edition of Windows 95 for your language must be a producti on version for the language to be supported by Personal Oracle7 for Wi ndows 95.
If your language is not listed, then you should select English. In thi s case, the user interface is displayed in English using the WE8ISO885 9P1 character set and the Starter Database is also built with the WE8I SO8859P1 character set. If you require a different character set for t he Starter Database, select the custom installation option and, when r equested, choose the desired character set for the Starter Database.
Selection of multibyte character set languages, such as Japanese or Ch inese, for use on single-byte editions of the Windows 95 operating sys tem, such as the U.S. Edition, is not supported. Installation will fai l if these languages are chosen. However, the internal database charac ter set that is chosen may be a multibyte character set. During a Cust om Installation, any of the listed character sets may be chosen as the internal character set for the Starter Database.
2.4 - Disk Space Requirements
Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95 requires 20 megabytes of free disk spa ce on the disk drive where the Windows 95 Virtual Memory page file is located (usually the c: drive) for a successful I
installation. This space is required in addition to the space needed f or Personal Oracle7 program files. The amount of space required for th e Personal Oracle7 program files is dependent upon the type of install ation that is chosen.
3 - Networking
3.1 - Before Installing SPX/IPX
On Windows 95, an SPX connection will work only if the machines have t he production version of Client 32 from Novell or Client for NetWare N etworks (included on the Windows 95 installation media) installed.
3.2 - Dial-Up Networking
If you have Windows 95 networking configured for network access over a modem, and you use SQL*Net on Windows 95 or you start the Personal Or acle7 for Windows 95 DBMS, a modem dial-up communications dialog box e ntitled "Connect To" may appear. This is a feature of Windows 95 when you have specified automatic dialing in the configuration for network access over a modem.
When this dialog appears, select Cancel and then continue your task.
4 - Online Help
If you install Online Help 7.3 (which is included with the Application Developer Option of Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95) before de-instal ling Online Help 7.2, both versions are listed as installed products i n the Software Asset Manager dialog box. However, only Online Help 7.3 is actually installed. If you choose to de-install the Online Help 7. 2 entry in the Software Asset Manager dialog box, you must then re-ins tall Online Help 7.3.
To avoid this problem, you can de-install Online Help 7.2 first, then install Online Help 7.3.
5 - Known Problems
5.1 - Installation
Universal Naming Convention (UNC) for file names and directory paths i s not supported. This has two implications:
• When providing a directory path or file name, use the standard DOS naming convention. The directory path or filename should be no lo nger than eight characters and the extension should be no longer than three characters.
• Use of the \\ notation to represent the start of a directory p ath is not supported.
If a language other than English is chosen when installing Personal Or acle7 for Windows 95, the installation will proceed without problems. However, when exiting from subsequent uses of the Installer (for insta nce, to install additional components) two error messages will display
indicating that an error occurred with the Oracle Installer. These mes sages do not apply, so you may disregard them by clicking 'OK'.
If you mount the CD-ROM and are installing from a network location, yo u cannot start the Oracle Installer from the Network Neighborhood icon located on your Desktop or in the
Run->Browse item of your Taskbar. You must map the network drive to wh ere the CD-ROM is located. This is done by right-clicking the Network Neighborhood icon and choosing Map Network Drive. Use the drive letter you assigned to the network location as your path to the Oracle Insta ller. If the Oracle Installer is not run in this manner, the following error message may be encountered:
• A problem occurred with the Oracle Installer. Try reinstalling it from the distribution media. Or, you can provide the following mes sage to Support to debug the problem:
• OS Failure: Unable to Set Current Working Directory
5.2 - Connecting to the Local Database Using TCP/IP
When trying to make a connection to the local database through TCP/IP loopback connections, the connection may fail and the following error may be displayed:
ORA-12203: TNS:unable to connect to destination.
In order to make the connection, wait a few seconds and try again. The connection should succeed the second time. The same sequence occurs i f you use the TCP/IP host name of your machine instead of TCP-loopback .
5.3 - Memory Leak
Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95 currently leaks about 10K of memory pe r connection made to the database. This appears to be caused by a bug in Windows 95 where thread local storage is not properly cleaned up. I f your database has been constantly running for a long time and you ar e running out of memory, shutting down the database and restarting it will correct this problem.
Microsoft is aware of this problem.
5.4 - Virtual Memory
When Windows 95 becomes virtual memory constrained, applications, incl uding Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95, may exhibit various problems. P lease ensure that:
1) You have virtual memory enabled. Windows 95 virtual memory setting s can be checked through the System item located in the Control Panel.
2) You have a reasonable amount of free disk space on the disk drive where the Windows 95 swap file is located. Typically, this is the same disk drive where you installed Windows 95. Every megabyte of free dis k space on this disk drive corresponds to an additional megabyte of av ailable virtual memory.
How much virtual memory you need depends upon various factors such as how many applications you have running, how much virtual memory each a pplication is using, how much memory is allocated to the Windows 95 di sk cache, etc. If you receive ORA-09352 or ORA-09242 errors when start ing or using Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95, you may not have enough virtual memory. The Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95 Starter Database n ormally requires 12-16 megabytes of free virtual memory in order to st art the database.
5.5 - SQL*Net and Multiple Local Processes
This problem only applies to two or more local applications that conne ct and disconnect from the database repeatedly using the Bequeath or I PC protocols on Windows 95. Currently, these protocols do not reliabl y handle multiple local processes trying to connect and reconnect to t he database on Windows 95. This can cause the client (i.e., the appli cation you are using) to hang.
The workaround for this problem is to use the Oracle Two Task driver t o connect to the database. To do this, use 2: as your connect string (this is also known as the database alias) for these client applicatio ns.
6 - Miscellaneous
6.1 - Database Utilities
The database utilities (IMPORT, EXPORT, and SQL*LOADER) are included i n command line format only. For information on using the database util ities, refer to Oracle7 Server Utilities, Release 7.3, available onlin e as an Adobe-Acrobat readable file.
You can use the Oracle Navigator to perform certain export and import functions. Please refer to the Step-by-Step Procedures section of the online help file Personal Oracle7 Help for information on using the Na vigator for exporting and importing.
6.2 - Nonblocking Functionality
Oracle7 nonblocking features, such as OCI nonblocking function calls, will not work using a normal local connection to a local Personal Orac le7 database.
However, for 32-bit applications, a local nonblocking connection to Pe rsonal Oracle7 can be made using the Bequeath adapter. After running S QL*Net Easy Configuration one time, the database alias Beq-Local is au tomatically configured to allow local connections using the Bequeath a dapter.
6.3 - Backup and Recovery
If you use the Recovery Manager when the database is shut down, do not use the Automatic Recovery option.
Tape support for Oracle Backup and Recovery is not supported.
The online help for Backup and Recovery includes help for tools not in cluded with this release. In addition, some of the Backup and Recovery program dialogs may refer to products that are not included in this r elease.
6.4 - Incoming Connections
At installation, Personal Oracle7 will try to configure itself for an incoming connection to provide support for distributed features such a s two-phase commit. This is only done if you already have installed an d configured Microsoft TCP/IP or Microsoft SPX networking protocol sup port. The Named Pipes protocol is not supported for this incoming conn ection. Configuration is done as follows:
If no Microsoft TCP/IP or Microsoft SPX networking is installed for Wi ndows 95, when Personal Oracle7 is installed the assumption is made th at this is a stand-alone PC and network access is not available. If Mi crosoft TCP/IP or Microsoft SPX networking is installed after Personal Oracle7 is installed, then you will need to rerun the Personal Oracle 7 installation, choose a custom installation and choose to install the SQL*Net Add-On software.
If Microsoft TCP/IP networking is already installed when Personal Orac le7 for Windows 95 is installed, then configuration will be done for a TCP/IP incoming connection.
If both Microsoft TCP/IP networking and Microsoft SPX networking are i nstalled when Personal Oracle7 for Windows 95 is installed, then the c onfiguration will be done for both TCP/IP and SPX, but only TCP/IP wil l be enabled, making TCP/IP the default.
If support for an SPX incoming connection is also desired, it is possi ble to enable the SPX configuration by removing the comment marks "#" in the SPX section of the incoming connection configuration file. This file is called LISTENER.ORA and is located in the <ORACLE_HOME>\NETWO RK\ADMIN directory. For this change to take effect, the database must be shut down and restarted.
Incoming connections are only supported for distributed features such as two-phase commit. Other incoming connections are not supported and may be rejected with the following error message returned:
ORA-12500: TNS:listener failed to start a dedicated server process
Configuration for incoming connections assumes that the database insta nce name, or SID, of the Personal Oracle7 database is ORCL; this is th e SID used for the Starter Database. If you create your own database t hat uses a SID other than ORCL, then you must modify the incoming conn ection configuration information. Edit the configuration file LISTENER .ORA, changing the "SID_NAME = ORCL" entry, located toward the end of the file, to specify a SID other than ORCL. Note that SIDs can only be four characters in length. For this change to take effect, the databa se must be shutdown and re-started.
6.5 - OCI
This version of OCI supports the Microsoft Visual C++ 4.x compiler and the Borland C++ 5.x compiler. Programs created with this version of O CI will run on both Windows 95 and Windows NT.
OCI nonblocking functionality is supported against Oracle7 version 7.2 or later databases and requires that you use SQL*Net version 2.2 or l ater on both the client and server if you are running against a remote database. For more information on nonblocking functionality with Pers onal Oracle7 for Windows 95, please see section 6.3 of this release no te.
OCI sample programs are built by opening the make file provided with e ach sample program in Microsoft Visual C++ and doing a project build.
This version of OCI provides a more flexible way of linking your OCI a pplications. However, if you must link using the old methodology (no l onger recommended), an ORA73.LIB located in the <ORACLE_HOME>\OCI\LIB\ OLD directory is provided.

 The database and networking components of this release are su pported on Windows NT, Version 3.51 and higher.
2 - Installing on Compressed Drive Not Supported
Personal Oracle7 for Windows NT does not support NTFS file compression . This means that you cannont install this product on a compressed dri ve.
3 - Performance Boost with Character Mode Tools
When using the database Import, Export and SQL*Loader utilities, Oracl e Corporation recommends that you use the command line versions for la rge database operations. Performance is substantially enhanced.
4 - Networking
4.1 SQL*Net Client Products
During a Custom install, when you select SQL*Net Client installation, all protocol adapters are available for installation. After selecting SQL*Net Client and then clicking the Install button, the available pro tocol adapters are displayed in a dialog box. You may choose the proto col adapters you want to install.

5. SQL*Plus for Windows NT/95 Version 3.3.2.0.x
6. Known Restrictions and Problems
1 - Changes Since Release 7.2
 The SQL*DBA (SQLDBA) application has been replaced by Server Manager (SVRMGR). Functionality remains the same. Information on Serv er Manager command line functionality is located in Appendix A of the Oracle Server Manager User's Guide provided as an Adobe-Acrobat readab le file.
 There is a WIN32 directory on the CD. This directory contains 32-bit common files for Windows NT and Windows 95.
 Online documentation for Windows NT-specific and base documen tation is provided in Adobe Acrobat (.PDF) format.
2 - Oracle Navigator
In the data grid, the maximum data length for each column is 1000. If a column has more data than 1000 bytes, it will be truncated to 1000. Also, you cannot enter more than 1000 bytes to a column.
Columns with the following data types will not display the data. Inste ad, the whole column will show an "N/A" string. Further, the column is read-only, i.e., you cannot enter data into the column.
• LONGRAW
• LONG
Non-alphabetic characters are not supported if they are used as the st arting character of an object name. For example, the object name _EMP is not accepted. Also, when you create an object, the Navigator does n ot support naming that object by enclosing the name in double quotes. For example, the object name "abc" is not supported. In addition, wh en creating a new table, the default value cannot contain quotation ma rks for column types that support characters.
3 - Networking
3.1 - SQL*NET Easy Configuration and Configuration Files
To avoid problems with networking, do not modify the TCP/IP sample fil es, TNSNAMES.ORA, or SQLNET.ORA. If you have a pre-existing TNSNAMES.O RA file, make a copy of it before installation. To configure a your ma chine to connect to a remote Oracle server that has been configured wi th Oracle Network Manager for Windows, choose Add Database Alias inste ad of Modify Database Alias in the SQL Net Easy Configuration menu.
Do not modify files in the following directories:
• ORACLE_HOME\NETWORK\ADMIN
• ORACLE_HOME\NETWORK\CFG
Oracle only supports configuration files created by using one of these two products: the SQL*NET Easy configuration utility (for simple data base connections), or Oracle Network Manager for Windows, for advanced SQL*NET features, such as Secure Network Services. (Note: Oracle Netw ork Manager is not part of this package.) SQL*NET Easy Configuration a nd Oracle Network Manager for Windows are mutually exclusive on any on e machine.
SQL*NET Easy configuration allows you to add up to 15 new database ali ases.
3.2 Before You Install SQL*Net V2.3
De-install SQL*Net Version 2.2 before installing the SQL*Net V2.3 prod uct included on this CD. The reason you must de-install Version 2.2 fi rst is because if you de-install it after installing Version 2.3, some shared 2.3 files will be overwritten, rendering 2.3 unusable. If you mistakenly de-install 2.2 after 2.3 is installed, re-install 2.3.
4 - Oracle7 Documentation
Oracle7 Documentation is provided in Adobe Acrobat-readable (PDF) file s. If you choose the "Application Developer" option when installing Pe rsonal Oracle7, this Documentation set is installed automatically. If you choose the "Runtime (Database only)" option, it is not installed. To view this documentation you must install the Adobe Acrobat reader. You can do this by running Adobe's installation program, Acroread.exe, located in the Acrobat directory of your release media. You can print all or portions of the documentation, as well as view it on-line.
If you have previously installed the entire Oracle documentation set f rom another product such as Oracle7 Server for Windows NT, and you ins tall the Oracle7 Documentation set, which is a subset of the entire Or acle documentation set, it will overwrite the previously installed doc umentation set with this subset. This means you may loose some docume ntation. If you want to maintain the entire Oracle documentation set, do not install the Oracle7 Documentation that comes with Personal Orac le7.
5 - SQL*Plus for Windows NT/95 Version 3.3.2.0.x
This release note contains important information about SQL*Plus that i s not included in the SQL*Plus documentation.
5.1 - Native 32-bit Version
This release of SQL*Plus is a native 32-bit product.
5.2 - Non-blocking Version
This version of SQL*Plus is non-blocking while executing queries/comma nds. This functionality is present during sessions in which the databa se connection uses SQL*Net 2.1.4 (or later) to an Oracle V7.1 (or late r) database. It allows users to cancel long running SQL queries and DM L commands at any point during the query/command, or to switch to othe r applications while the query/command is running. This function can b e disabled from the Options menu.
You can use the menu option to turn off nonblocking so that a dialog b ox telling you a query is underway will not be displayed.
5.3 - SET AUTOTRACE and PLUSTRCE.SQL
A new function (SET AUTOTRACE) is included in this release of SQL*Plus . SET AUTOTRACE allows users to access STATISTICS data on several Dyna mic Performance tables (for information about the Dynamic Performance tables refer your RDBMS Documentation).
Access to these tables is available to users who have the PLUSTRCE rol e. To grant this role to users, run PLUSTRCE.SQL while connected as SY S (the common name of the script is PLUSTRCE.SQL; this name may vary d epending on your operating system).
5.4 - SET NEWPAGE 0
In this release of SQL*Plus, the SET NEWPAGE 0 command does not clear the screen between pages; instead, a black box appears. This occurs be cause the text printing APIs do not support the formfeed character "/f " on these platforms.
5.5 - Multiple Versions of SQL*Plus
Installation of Version 3.3 does not overwrite previous versions of SQ L*Plus. Therefore, multiple versions of SQL*Plus can exist on the same computer. You may de-install older versions of the software if you ch oose.
5.6 - National Language Support
This release of SQL*Plus supports the following values for the NLS_LAN G parameter.
