There are two common kinds of rewards, the extrinsic reward and
the intrinsic reward. The extrinsic reward refers to the outside
rewards such as money, and the intrinsic reward refers to the inside
rewards such as emotion. Extrinsic reward is widely used almost
everywhere, while some people argue that we should be using intrinsic
rewards rather than extrinsic rewards. Certainly I agree that
intrinsic rewards have better affect when they are used in companies,
but we have to admit that extrinsic rewards, which many people use to
raise their children, is more effective here as long as the rewards
are not too expensive.
If you go to ask several parents about the methods they use to
motivate their children to become more interested in studying or get
higher grades in school, probably all of them will tell you that they
use rewards like candies and toys, and in most cases, candies and
toys work pretty well. It has been proven that children tend to be
studying harder after parents have made the promises of extrinsic
rewards.
Because of its failure of being used on employees, it might be
confusing why using extrinsic rewards is a good way on children. It
would not be hard to understand if we consider the differences
between the targets of the rewards. Children are more likely to be
having less or none social experience. The purpose of any kinds of
rewards is trying to make the children become interested in what they
are doing. Children may not really have enough interests in intrinsic
rewards because of lack of experience, or we can say children have
not yet realized the importance of intrinsic rewards; therefore,
intrinsic rewards may not work on children as well as they are on
employees.
Another thing to notice is the differences between the working
goals of employees and children. Employees have to work for money to
survive in the world, so their main purpose of working can be earning
money; therefore, material rewards may not be appropriate because it
doesn’t bring any interests to their already stressful lives.
Meanwhile, children don’t have to worry about stressful issues as
feeding the family, paying the bills. Having the attraction of
material rewards is important for them as part of understanding the
real world. In this way, the children will be able to learn to do
their best to get something they want, because this is an important
part of their life experience they will need.
Everything has two sides, so does the extrinsic rewards. When
the rewards go too big, it can be dangerous. If parents offer
children some rewards that are too valuable or too attractive,
children may end up doing everything they can, even illegal or
immortal methods, to get them. Sometimes when parents promise
children very big rewards like a new car if they do well in exams,
children may start to cheat in the exam if they found it impossible
for them to get the good grades in order to get the rewards.
For all the reasons above, I think the extrinsic rewards are
good and important for children as long as the rewards are not too
big that can cause troubles. As parents, they should be aware of
this. As children, they should also realize that rewards are not the
ultimate way to study hard. Children should learn to study hard
without extrinsic rewards, that’s also very important for them.
