The Holly and the Ivy (United Kingdom)
Description:
This is one of a series of medieval English carols on the
subject of the rivalry between the holly and ivy vying for
mastery in the forest. These two plants came to be associated
with the sexes, holly being masculine and ivy feminine. In
this carol, the holly is used to represent various aspects
of Christ's life and the ivy is not discussed at all.
Lyrics:
1. The holly and the ivy, When they are both full grown, Of
all the trees that are in the wood, The holly bears the crown.
(chorus) - The rising of the sun, And the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ, Sweet singing in the choir. ----
2. The holly bears a blossom, As white as any flow'r,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, To be our sweet Savior. (
chorus) - The rising of the sun, And the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ, Sweet singing in the choir.
3. The holly bears a berry, As red as any blood, And Mary bore
sweet Jesus Christ, To do poor sinners good. (chorus) -The rising of the sun, And the running of the deer, The playing
of the merry organ, Sweet singing in the choir. ----
4. The holly bears a prickle, As sharp as any thorn, And Mary
bore sweet Jesus Christ, On Christmas in the morn. (chorus) - The rising of the sun, And the running of the deer, The playing
of the merry organ, Sweet singing in the choir.
---- After all, tomorrow is another day! |
