PHILADELPHIA - Allen Iverson argued with the man police say later shot at the Sixers star and three other men outside a city nightclub, witnesses have told police.

Police are now investigating whether the man who was actually shot - a friend of Iverson’s - or Iverson himself was the intended target.

Witnesses told police that Iverson was in a group of men who got into an argument - possibly over basketball - with Carlos Perez, 24, of Philadelphia, Capt. Thomas Quinn said yesterday.

"We believe he’s part of the target. Is he specifically the target? We don’t know for sure. But if I’m standing in a group of four people, somebody fired two shots at me, I’m considering myself a target," Quinn said.

Police are searching for Perez, who remains at large and faces aggravated assault charges in the April 14 shooting of Larry Robinson, 46, of Smithfield, Va.

Robinson drove himself to the hospital in Iverson’s car after he was shot in the leg about 2:30 a.m. outside the Glam nightclub. He was treated and released.

Based on witness reports, police believe that Perez was part of group that was involved in a verbal altercation with members of Iverson’s entourage inside the club that night. Iverson’s group was outside the club when shots rang out from a passing car.

Police say Perez fled after shooting Robinson with a silver semiautomatic handgun. Authorities found two 9 mm shell casings at the scene.

"We believe this was a spontaneous event," Quinn said.

According to Sgt. Roland Lee, Perez has had "prior contact with the police." Police are talking with Perez’s lawyer about his surrender, Quinn said. Yesterday morning, police searched an apartment where Perez was staying but didn’t find him there.

Quinn said Iverson has not made himself available to be interviewed by police. Iverson and the Sixers are playing in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Game 3 is tomorrow in New Orleans.

"The team will have no comment," Sixers senior director of communications Karen Frascona said yesterday.
