| 近期美國的大企業接連出現帳目問題，傳媒大多以“Cook the books”做大標題，直指其高層聯同銀行及核數師一起造假帳。
Cook the books是informal的用字，意指「造假帳」。由於傳媒喜愛用這個字句，近年已漸漸變成cliche了。Cook the books相信是從另一個informal字句cook up衍生而來。 Cook up是指concoct or make up，意即捏造出來，帶有虛假或虛構的成分，雖屬「創作」，但含有極大貶意，如：We have to cook up something to explain the whole mess to the police. 比較鮮見的cliche: cook somebody's goose，是形容他人徹底失敗，如：When Simon noted that most of the exam questions were not within his area of study, he knew his goose was cooked. 在嚴肅文章中，cook the books或cook up等informal字句應盡量避免使用，可選擇比較正統的false accounting。 至於idiom：too many cooks spoil the broth內的cooks，當然是指廚師而不是偽造，這句idiom的含意與中文俗語「人多手腳亂」的意思差不多。 撰文：梅智傑 ----  |
