在大学的英美文学课中有不少典故成语。 学生缺乏
这方面知识而不甚了了。现慢慢介绍一二。
(18) gild the lily
( 画蛇添足，多此一举)
语出莎士比亚著名历史剧: << 约翰王>>,原句为:
to gild refined gold, to paint the lily( 把纯金镀上
金箔，替纯洁的百合花涂脂抹粉 )。 因之gild the lily
直译是“替百合花镀金”意译是:“画蛇添足，多此一举”。
现在: “ gild the lily ” 作为常用成语收入辞书,广泛
应用。
e.g. it was a lovely old house as it was, but
( 这栋今人喜爱的旧房子实际上己经很好了，
to sell it they thought they had to build on a porch
而他们认为要想更好出卖，还必须造走廊和车库，我说是:
and a garage. that's gilding the lily, i'd say.
简直多此一举。)
