* Reports from Northern Ireland say violence in the region continues
today, prompted by the blocking of a Protestant march through
a Catholic neighborhood in Portadown by police yesterday.
- reports say riots have also broken out in Belfast and other
cities in the province.
NATIONAL
* Mandatory evacuation orders remain in effect this morning for
an estimated 50,000 residents of Florida in areas threatened
by ongoing wildfires.
- related: rain is forecast for Florida this week, and
some sections of Interstate 95 in the state remain closed.
* The National Education Association, at the organization's annual
meeting, has rejected a proposed merger with the American
Federation of Teachers.
- NEA officials say, however, that the group will work
closely with the AFT in the future.
* Negotiations between General Motors and the United Auto Workers
are scheduled to resume today, as strikes by workers at two
Flint, Michigan, parts plants enter their second month.

- the workers have blocked the Trans-Siberian railway to
protest the non-payment of overdue wages.
* U.S. envoy Richard Holbrooke said yesterday that, beginning
today, diplomatic observers in the Yugoslav province of
Kosovo will be free to move throughout the province as part
of an effort to defuse violence in the region.
- the patrols were agreed to by Yugoslav President
Slobodan Milosevic last month.
* U.S. Under Secretary of State Thomas Pickering is scheduled to
