在大学的英美文学课中有不少典故成语。 学生缺乏
这方面知识而不甚了了。现慢慢介绍一二。
(1) the tune the old cow died of!

这是英国的一句俗语。出自英国的一首古老的歌曲。
讲的是一则寓言故事:
there was an old man, & he had an old cow,
but he had no fodder to give her,
so he took up his fiddle & played her the tune;
" consider, good cow, consider,
this isn't time for the grass to grow,
consider, good cow, consider. "
of course, the old cow died of! so the tune the
old cow died of! ( 空言无补! ) FE:
