(7) to get the short end of the stick:意思是受到不公平的待遇或被人不重視 (being treated unfairly)。例如:
Sometimes nice people get the short end of the stick. (有時好人反而受到不公平的待遇。)
Getting the short end of the stick will make people mad. (人們不喜歡被人輕視或受到不平的待遇。)
Be careful what you say;you don't want to get the short end of the stick. (你要小心說話;不要讓人輕視。)
(注意:沒有“long end of the stick”的說法)
(8) to get (way) out of hand:意思是難以控制的情形;不聽話或不守紀律 (to be out of control;difficult to control some situation)。例如:
The fight between two young men has gotten out of hand. (兩名年輕人打架,已經到了難以控制的地步。)
This child usually gets (way) out of hand. (這孩子通常很不聽話。)
(way = really,只是加強語氣,一般都省去。)
We will stop this debate before it gets (way) out of hand. (我們要停止這場辯論,免得到了難以控制的地步。)
His wife's holiday shopping will get way out of hand. (他太太喜歡在假期購物,到了無法控制的地步。)
(即超出預算,亂買東西。)
註:有時動詞不用get,也用“verb to be”。例如:
The situation is out of hand. (局面無法控制。)
(9) to vent (one's) spleen on (someone):意思是向某人發脾氣(to get mad at someone)(spleen 本意就是壞脾氣或怒氣) 例如:
In my opinion children should be taught not to vent their spleens on others. (我認為要教導孩子不要對別人發脾氣。)
She vents her spleen on her husband all the time. (她老拿她老公出氣。)
Venting your spleen on your wife may make you look bad. (對太座發脾氣會使你不好看。)
As a professor he was not supposed to vent his spleen on his students. (做為一位教授,他不該對他學生發脾氣。)
(10) to rule the roost:意思是當家作主,支配一切 (to control the house or to be in charge of anything.) (roost 本意是雞棚; to rule = to control;多半用在家庭,指 house or husband)所以有:“The rooster rule the henhouse”的說法。(公雞在雞棚裡當家作主。)(henhouse 本是指母雞的雞棚) 例句:
In most cases, the husband rules the roost. (一般而言,老公是當家作主。)
Do housewives rule the roost? (家庭主婦能否當家作主呢?)
有時也可用於廣義方面:(can be used in broad sense)例如:
The baseball team ruled the roost last year. =They won the game.
The boss failed to rule the roost. = He failed to take charge. (疏於職守)
(11) to get a life:意思是不要整天花太多的時間在一件事情上,也要做些其他的事情,過著正常的生活 (Don't spend so much time in doing one thing.)
(多半是批評過去某種行為,也就是過去的生活不正常,現在需要一個正常的日子,所以也有“get some life in your life”的說法。) 例句:
Don't go to movie every night;get a life.(不要每天晚上去看電影;也可做些其他事情,過個正常的生活。)
Since the boy works on computer everyday, his parents told him to get a life. (這孩子整天搞電腦,他父母叫他做些其他事,過個正常的日子。)
I told him,“Stop doing what you are doing and get a life.”(我告訴他不要再做現在所做的事,應該過個正常的生活。)
Now that you are divorced, I hope you can get a life. (既然你離了婚,我希望你能過個正常的日子。)
