| 18. to play cat and mouse：意思是搞貓戲老鼠的把戲，或是欲擒故縱的手法。(play games with aggressive and passive attitude) 例如：
Some people feel that the U.S. and China were playing cat and mouse in regard to spy plane collision. (有人認為中美的撞機事件是一種貓鼠的把戲) In business negotiations, there are always cat-and-mouse games.(如果動詞不是用 play，後面多半跟 game) (在商業上的談判，常有一些貓鼠的把戲。） The police have played cat and mouse with the murderer. (警察對那兇殺犯採用欲擒故縱的手法。) 19. to go on the dole：意思是失業而領取政府救濟金（most of time the unemployed live on public welfare) 例如： Thousands of Americans are out of jobs and may go on the dole. (千千萬萬美國人失業，可能都要領取社會福利金。) Will persons going on the dole be respected ? (靠救濟金生活的人會受尊敬嗎？) When his unemployment insurance run out, he would have to go on the dole. (當他失業保險金用完了，他就得靠政府救濟金。) Some people have gone on the dole for years. (有些人多年來是靠社會救濟金生活的) 20. to be in the hot seat：意思是處在困難的境況，有很多的壓力 (under lots of pressure or in a difficult position) 例如： He has resigned from his job because he has been in the hot seat for years. (他的辭職是因為多年來的工作壓力) Mr. Wang is really in the hot seat over this problem. (王先生被這問題搞得坐立不安) Due to the current investigation, he will be in the hot seat. (由於目前的調查，他將處於困境。) When he testify before Congress, he will be in the hot seat. (當他在國會作證時，他將有許多壓力。) (註：也有人用「to be on the hot seat」) 21. to make waves：意思是興風作浪，引起麻煩 (to make trouble) (如果能 keep water still，那麼就可以 sail peacefully in the boat，不希望別人製造波浪）這與「rock the boat」意思相近。例如： Many politicians like to make waves in order to be kept in the media. (許多政客為了能在媒體上出現而喜歡興風作浪) Teenagers tend to make waves with their parents and teachers. (青少年往往對父母和師長製造麻煩) 22. to keep (one's) nose clean：意思是避免製造麻煩 (to keep away from trouble) (用在複數句時，nose 也要加 s) 例如： The newly released inmates are trying to keep their noses clean. (剛釋放出來的犯人，設法避免製造麻煩。) A law-abiding person needs to keep his (her) nose clean. (奉公守法人應該避免製造麻煩) To avoid being labeled“delinquents”, teenagers should keep their noses clean. (為了不要被人稱為「不良青少年」，小伙子應該避免製造麻煩。) 23. to drive (someone) up the wall：意思是讓人生氣不高興 (to annoy or upset someone) 例如： The boy is driving his mother up the wall because of his ill behavior. (這孩子的不良行為使他老媽生氣) Be careful not to drive your teacher up the wall. (小心不要讓你的老師不高興) If you ask too many questions, you may drive your boss up the wall. (假如你問太多問題，你也許會讓老闆很煩。) 24. to write （someone or something）off：意思是拋棄或丟棄 (to throw away or to discard) 但在經商失敗時，也用在報銷、註銷或扣除損失的數額（to deduct a business loss）也有人寫為：to write off（someone or something）例如： After a hot argument, she wrote off her boyfriend. (經過一場激烈的爭吵後，她拋棄她的男友。) (或 Afte r…… she wrote her boyfriend off.) He will write off the charitable contributions from his income taxes. (他由所得稅中，扣除慈善的樂捐。) Don't write him（her）off; he (she) is a good catch. 不可拋棄他（她）因為他（她）是值得看中的婚配。 (good catch 也是不易多得的好人) 25. to take up with (someone)：意思是對某人發生興趣，或與某人開始親密交往。(to date someone or to fall in love with someone) 例如： Over the past year Mr. A has taken up with Miss B. (過去一年來，A 先生與 B 小姐約會。) After he met her at the bar, he took up with her. (在酒吧見面後，他對她發生興趣。) As she is such a pretty woman, many men would like to take up with her. (她是如此漂亮的女人，許多男人對她有興趣。) (註：這句口語，一般用於「一方對另一方」，即 A 對 B，或 B 對 A，所以不說：Mr. A and Miss B have taken up with each other.) 26. to pave the way to（或 for）：意思是為…… 而鋪平道路或為…… 而準備（to make the path or to lay a groundwork of something）例如： A good education will pave the way to finding a decent job. (好的教育將為好工作而鋪路) Your hard wark has paved the way to success. (你的努力工作已為成功而鋪平道路) Honesty and sincerity pave the way for our lasting friendship. (誠實和懇切是為我們長久友誼而鋪路) Early space exploration has paved the way for the current space station. (早期太空探險奠定了現在太空站的基礎) 27. to paint the town red：意思是盡興享受，狂歡作樂，過著愉快的時刻（to enjoy oneself; to have a good time）例如： He is going out tonight to paint the town red.
