Carew
Location: Pembrokeshire(SN 045037) Type: enclosure Date: 1100
Built by Gerald de Windsor. None of the ruins you see today are that of the original castle. The earliest remains are of the blocked gate. During Tudor times the structure and design of the castle changed.
Aberystwyth

One of Edward l's castles. There are only ruins left of the inner ward, concentric walls and towers
Canterbury
Location: Kent(TR 145574) Type: motte Date: unknown
Granted to Hubert de Burgh in 1227. A great tower was built which was 90ft by 75ft. The date for the tower is unknown. The castle went through many modifications of stonework throughout its lifespan.
Corfe
Location: Dorset(SY 958823) Type: motte Date: 1080
A curtain wall and keep were added at the end of the 11th century. The castle withstood a siege by King Stephen in 1139. In 1643 the castle withstood a three month siege by Parliamentary forces. In 1646 the castle was taken by enemy troops entering disguised as relieving forces.
Edinburgh

Built by Malcolm III. Altered many times over the centuries, and what is seen today is mostly from the 17th century. The oldest part is the Norman chapel. The castle was attacked and exchanged hands many times.
Bodiam
Location: Sussex(TQ 785256) Type: quadrangular Date: 1385
Built by Sir Edward Dalyngrygge. It was of a quadrangular plan and surrounded by a broad moat. The castle was attacked in 1484, and in the Civil War the threat of attack brought on surrender.
Caergwrle
Location: Flintshire(SJ 307572) Type: enclosure Date: unknown
A small castle with three half round towers and small turret. There is very little history. It is known to have been destroyed and rebuilt in 1282.
Conwy
Location: Aberconwy-Colwyn(SH 781777) Type: enclosure Date: 1283
Built by Edward I. Thick curtain walled castle, with eight huge flanking towers. A very compact castle.
Caldicot
Location: Monmouthshire(ST 487885) Type: enclosure Date: unknown
A large round keep remains on the motte. The walls had four round towers, and an odd gate.
Conisbrough
Location: Yorkshire(SK 515989) Type: enclosure Date: 1174
Built by Hamelin Plantagenet. The enclosing walls are 35ft tall and 7ft thick. The great tower is cylindrical, but with six wedge-shaped buttresses, and is 95ft tall. The castle was never sieged.
Angle

Built by Robert de Shirburn during the reign of Edward III (1327-77). A well preserved rectangle pele tower. One of the few pele towers in Wales.
Ashby de la Zouche

Converted to a castle in 1447 by William, Lord Hastings. The license to convert Ashby covered Kirby Muxloe castle as well. The feature is the 90ft. high great tower.
Bamburgh
Location: Northumberland(NU 184350)Type: enclosure Date: unknown
The history of the castle is somewhat clouded due to the many building phases, and previous fortifications on the site. Henry II built the great tower in 1160, and is 69ft by 61ft by 65ft tall.
Beaumaris
Location: Anglesey(SH 607763) Type: concentric Date: 1294
Classic example of a concentric castle. Two gatehouses, six towers, and had curtain walls 36ft. high and over 15ft. thick.
Bolton
Location: Yorkshire (SE 034918)Type: fortified manor Date: 1379
Built of local stone and quadrangular in plan. The castle was besieged in 1644 by Parliament.
Caerlaverock
Location: Dumfries & Galloway(NY 026656) Type: enclosure Date: 1280
Built by the Maxwells. An unusual triangle shape castle having a long history. Surrounded by a moat with the gatehouse in one corner. Murdoch, Duke of Albany, was imprisoned here before execution in 1425. Captured by the English in 1300. Captured in 1357 by Roger Kirkpatrick. Rebuilt by Robert, 2nd Lord Maxwell in 1452. Surrendered to the English in 1545. Recaptured by the Scots. Taken by the English in 1570. Rebuilt in 1634. Taken and slighted in 1640.
Cardiff
Location: Cardiff(ST 180767) Type: motte Date: 1081
A castle with a motte forty feet high. A keep was built later in the castle's life. More modern structures were also built, and the castle was occupied from Roman times until 1947.
Chester
Location: Cheshire(SJ 404657) Type: motte Date: 1069
Built by William the Conqueror. There are remains of a 12th century square wooden tower on the motte. In 1237 the castle received stonework and an enclosing wall. The castle was besieged during the Civil War.
Clifford's
Location: York(SE 605515) Type: motte Date: 1069
A castle with many building phases. In 1190 it was burned. In 1228 the tower on the motte was destroyed by a storm. In 1245 the castle was rebuilt with a curtain and towers.
Deal
Location: Kent(TR 378521) Type: tower Date: 1538
Built by Henry VIII. One of the many coastal forts built during this time frame. It was taken in 1648 by the Royalists.
Dover
Location: Kent(TR 326416) Type: concentric Date: unknown
Built upon a hillfort. William the Conqueror added earthworks. Henry II added stonework consisting of a keep and enclosing walls. The castle has been greatly altered over the centuries
Dryslwyn
Location: Carmarthenshire(SN 554203) Type: enclosure Date: unknown
A Welsh built castle containing three stone enclosures in line. The inner ward contained a large rectangular great hall. Edward l seized it in 1287 by digging a tunnel into the chapel. Originally the castle was held by Rhys ap Maredudd.
Flint
Location: Flintshire(SJ 247733) Type: enclosure Date: 1277
The first of the Edwardian castles to be built in Wales. It had a rectangular enclosure with three cylindrical corner towers and a hugh cylindrical great tower in the fourth corner. Flint was surrendered to Parliament in 1646 and slighted.
