Leeds
Location: Kent(TQ 836533) Type: enclosure Date: 12th century
The original castle has disappeared. What is seen today dates to Edward I's time. The castle is surrounded by a man made lake.
Newark
Location: Nottinghamshire(SK 796540) Type: quadrangular Date: 1130
Built by the Bishop of Lincoln. Stonework was added during the reign of Stephen. King John held the castle during the Magna Carta War, and also died there in 1216. Slighted after the Civil War.
Narberth
Location: Pembrokeshire(SN 110144) Type: enclosure Date: 13th century
A stone enclosure castle built on a ridge. It contained a cylindrical great tower, and four of the five flanking towers can be seen.
Laugharne
Location: Carmarthenshire(SN 302107) Type: enclosure Date: 12th century
A castle of unknown shape was built, but what we see today is stone work of the 13th or 14th century. There is a cylindrical great tower, another tower and a gatehouse. There were two baileys.
Manorbier
Location: Pembrokeshire(SS 064978) Type: enclosure Date: 11th century
Began as a earthwork castle. Birthplace of Gerald of Wales in 1146. Stonework and structures have been added. Sited along the coast, and is in excellent state of preservation.
Montgomery
Location: Powys(SO 221968) Type: enclosure Date: 1220
A double enclosure castle, replacing Old Montgomery which was a 11th century motte castle. Slighted after the Civil War. At that time it belonged to the Herbert family.
Lydford
Location: Devon(SX 510848) Type: tower Date: 11th century
The motte was formed by heaping earth up around the tower. The square great tower is 50ft wide. It has been used as a prison and courthouse.
Ludlow
Location: Shropshire(SO 508746) Type: enclosure Date: 11th century
The enclosing wall is 10ft thick. In the 12th century an unusual round Norman Chapel was built. In 1138 it withstood a siege by King Stephen.
Llansteffan
Location: Carmarthenshire(SN 352102)Type: enclosure Date: 12th century
A double enclosure castle, with an inner enclosure being a irregular polygon. The outer enclosure contained a gatehouse with flanking towers. Captured by Owain Glyndwr in the early 15th century.
Kenilworth
Location: Warwickshire(SP 278723) Type: motte Date: 1122
Built by Geoffrey de Clinton. Kenilworth started as a motte castle, but went through many building periods. A great tower, curtain wall, towers and other stone buildings were added.
Hawarden
Location: Flintshire(SJ 319653) Type: motte Date: 1277
One of the four lordship castles in North Wales built or fortified by Edward l. Received stonework in the early thirteenth century.
Haverfordwest
Location: Pembrokeshire(SM 953157) Type: enclosure Date: 12th Century
Built by Gilbert de Clare upon a ridge about 80 feet above the River Cleddau. It has two enclosures. The curtain wall is 12 feet thick. Attacked by Owain Glyndwr with 3000 Frenchmen but the castle held out.
Harlech

Built in the second phase of Edward l castle building program. The dominant structure is its gatehouse, set in the east inner wall.
Goodrich
Location: Herefordshire(S0 579199) Type: enclosure Date: 12th century
Built by Godric Mappestone. Nothing remains of the original castle. The current castle was built over it. Much of the work of the keep is contributed to William Fitz Baderon and William Marshal built the enclosing wall. William de Valence built much of the castle in the 1280's. Goodrich was slighted in 1646.
Fotheringhay
Location: Northamptonshire(TL 061930) Type: motte Date: 12th century
Built by Simon de Senlis. A very historical castle with only a fragment of masonry beside the River Nene. Richard III was born here in 1452 and Mary, Queen of Scots was executed here in 1587.
Hever
Location: Kent(TQ 477452) Type: fortified manor Date: 1270
There is debate on when and who actually built the castle. It sits in the middle of a large moat. A Tudor house incorporates much of the medieval masonry of the castle.
Kirby Muxloe
Location: Leicestershire(SK 524046) Type: fortified manor Date: 1480
Built of brick by Lord Hastings. A quadrangular structure with corner towers. It was never completed, as Lord Hastings was executed during building.
Loughor
Location: Swansea(SS 564980) Type: motte Date: 12th century
A castle raised on a natural mound. The stonework dates to the 13th century. Demolished in 1150 by the Welsh. Repaired and again demolished in 1215.
Newport
Location: Pembrokeshire(SN 057389) Type: enclosure Date: 13th century
Built on a natural mound, with a moat around it. There are a few traces of the curtain, remains of three towers, and a gatehouse. The present mansion absorbs most of the medieval ruins.
Llandovery
Location: Carmarthenshire(SN 767342) Type: motte Date: 12th century
Founded by Richard Fitzpons. It was taken by the Welsh in 1116 and recovered by the family in 1158. The castle was strengthened at that time. Stone work was added, including a D-end tower, and a gatehouse.
Llantrisant
Location: Rhondda Cynon Taff(ST 047834) Type: unknown Date: 13th century
The castle had two baileys, the inner smaller than the outer. The inner bailey has remains of the wall and great tower. There are also fragments of the flanking towers in the curtain wall.
Longtown
Location: Herefordshire(SO 321291) Type: motte Date: 12th century
Walter de Lacy rebuilt the castle of stone in the 13th century. This included a keep on the motte and an enclosure curtain. The round keep was 46ft in diameter and 18ft thick. Abandoned in the 14th century.
Neath
Location: Neath-Port Talbot(SS 753977) Type: enclosure Date: 1180
In the 13th century the castle received stonework and two towers. A later gatehouse was raised. Neath was attacked in 1231 and 1258, and captured in 1321. There was also a earlier motte castle here built in 1130, by Richard de Granville.
