Tian had actors for parents and famous directors Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou were his classmates. He himself has been labelled one of China's top directors after movies Dao Ma Zei (Horse Thief) and Li Lian Yin won him recognition in the Swiss International Film Festival of 1991, and the Special Encouragement Prize in the Berlin International Film Festival of the same year. His latest work, Xiao Cheng Zhi Chun (Springtime in a Small Town), has toured all over China. Tian's films are highly critical of humanity, exposing the weaknesses in man's character.
