The Flair
Cocktails with flair
The long-awaited opening of The Flair, a new Chivas Regal-themed cocktail bar which has been in the offing for two months, did not disappoint the punters.
This glass and chrome affair has a smart sassy feel to it that its neighbor, The Mix, aspires to but doesn’t quite attain. Entry is made to an impressive welcome of “ huanying guanglin” from a dozen or so of the ear-phoned staff, who bow very low, giving away the origins of the management: this is the latest in a chain of 18 Korean run joints, and the first to open on the mainland.
The main attraction is the bar-staff – they’re not just cute, they’re fast and fun and can juggle bottles of whiskey as easily as mixing drinks. Every night they show off their skills with whoops from the crowd, taking turns to share the limelight behind the stage-lit bar, hamming it up to get ore applause. The “shows” are every hour after nine o’clock.
The cocktail list is impressive, and prices star at 35RMB, which is about average for Beijing, but the sodas are not cheap at 30 RMB. “We don’t serve beer,” says Sha Sha, the GM, “but we can find a cocktail for everyone, whatever their taste, be it sweet, sour, strong or linght.”
The seating is comfy, either in booths or on a glass platform, and the music – funky disco and rock music to get your toes tapping – is loud enough to feel party-like without being deafening. This looks like a great place to warm up before heading on to a club.
