Giovanni Agnelli, 81, patriarch of the Fiat auto conglomerate and an icon in Italian social and cultural history, died of cancer at his home in Turin, his family said Friday. He came to embody Italy's postwar economic renaissance, catapulting Fiat Group into Italy's largest private employer. He ran the company for 30 years until 1996, when he stepped down as chief executive. Fiat's auto division last year posted operating losses of $1.5 billion and overall losses of about $2 billion. Agnelli's death was announced on the day some 70 members of the family were gathering to discuss the company's future. Giovanni's brother Umberto, 68, will take over. ----
