Today Jean de Mouy, Jean Patou's great-nephew, runs this splendid house and carries on the spirit of its founder whose genius lay in an apparent contradiction. His creations were symbols of both good taste and seduction, of discrete, refined elegance and boldness and modernity. In the early 1920's, Jean Patou revolutionized fashion by inventing sportswear and designing the first cardigan, the first tennis skirt and the first knit bathing suits. Jean Patou was also the first couturier to use his initials as a stylistic motif. He dressed the tennis champion Suzanne Lenglen, Jospehine Baker, elegant high society women and the queens of Romania and Spain. He is the one who launched the first suntan lotion, the famous Huile de Chaldee. It should come as no surprise that Jean Patou had the incredible daring to launch Joy, the world's most expensive perfume, just after the 1929 stock market crash. The new fragrance was - and still is - a lavish bouquet of rare essences. elegance~~

Jasmine, that exquisite, tremendously fragile flower, can only be picked, by hand, at dawn. It takes no less than 10,600 jasmine flowers from Grasse to make a single ounce of Joy perfume. The May rose from Grasse yields the world's most beautiful - and most expensive - absolute. Jean Kerleo, Jean Patou's perfume designer, is implacably demanding each step of the way when developing a perfume based on such rare and beautiful ingredients. Turning the concrete into an absolute, which literally means transforming the flowers' pollen into a fragrant liquid, is a particularly delicate process that he oversees personally in Jean Patou laboratories. The bottles are crafted with the same care and painstaking attention to detail. They are made of cut glass, polished, and brushed at the wheel using age-old methods of genuine craftsmanship. Then they are decorated with gold leaf and filled drop by drop. The ground glass stopper, traditional natural seal and hand-wound gold thread make each bottle of Jean Patou perfume a genuine jewel. |
