Its Friday night, and around the world a million and a half listeners tune in to hear what Pete Tong has picked for his Essential Selection on BBC's Radio 1. Britain's most popular DJ is a tastemaker extraordinaire, and with one spin can set an unknown producer hurling into the star filled stratosphere. How does so much influence come to one man? Pete's first DJ job was actually at a wedding - and he was 15 years old! Inspired by the underground soul scene of the times (the late 70s) he began playing soul and dance music in every club that would give him a gig. In 1979, he became a journalist and then features editor for Blues & Soul magazine, and soon was appearing on local radio stations. He got his first break with Radio 1 presenting a regular 15 minute 'magazine' feature on dance music on Peter Powell's show. "That was a strange experience, but also very exciting" says Pete. "RAdio 1 was at the peak of its popularity. I had to say what was happening on the streets. I was the first person to play Malcolm McLaren's Buffalo Gals on the radio." His knowlege of the scene and ear for a crossover hit saw him appointed A&R manager at the new independent label London Records in 1983. Pete continued to build both his label and radio careers, eventually launching his own impring FFRR in 1988. "The first record I put out was a very cool, quite sexually-explicit single from Chicago called Baby Wants To Ride," he recalls. "I had a rule which was to sign one relatively indulgent record to every potential big hit. I was aware from the start that you can be hip, but you also have to balance the books." This strategy paid off and FFRR became one of the most influential and thriving labels. In 1991 Pete started his Essential Selection show, and instantly the exploding rave/club culture latched on to his ground-breaking show, which merged commercial with cutting-edge, and spanned all genres of dance music, from house to techno, jungle, hip hop, funk and soul.
