The major French glassmaker of the 1870s, François-Eugène Rousseau, produced work with strong references to Japanese art and to Chinese jade carving, in a style known in France as Japonisme.

This work is constructed from laminated sheets of glass which are sandblasted to create an effect of icy translucency and painted in enamel pigments. It exemplifies this artist's style, which combines sculptural form with pictorial or painterly imagery. Kazumi Ikemoto is acclaimed for his dynamic and craggy forms that, upon close inspection, reveal intricately painted scenes of hybrid creatures, whimsical landscapes, and distant perspectives.

Ettore Sottsass is one of the most expressive and original designers working in Italy and was the key figure in the Memphis group of designers, established in Milan in 1981. Their work was a vivid expression of post-modernism, a new approach to design that welcomed decoration and drew from popular culture and historical design. Sottsass designs in many materials for both mass and limited production of technical equipment, appliances, furniture and domestic objects.
Teapot 1974
The influential American glass artist Richard Marquis first visited Australia in 1974, demonstrating his glassblowing techniques and advising on the establishment of glass workshops in several centres. His work strongly influenced a number of Australian glass artists.
