(好，這是四個五分的，三個一毛的和兩個兩毛五。) 你也可請教警衛人員： Officer, will you please show me how to make a local call？ (可否請你教我怎麼打當地的電話) 對方也許說： First you pick up the phone, you will hear the dial tone, and then put 2 quarters into the slot, then you dial the phone number. (首先拿起電話，就可聽到嗡嗡聲，在投幣口放進兩個兩毛五硬幣，再撥電話號碼。) 或者問： Excuse me, Sir, will you please tell me how to make a long distance call to Maryland？ (怎麼打長途電話到馬里蘭州？) 對方可能回答說： If you call collect, first you need to dial “0”, and tell the operator you want to make a collect call, and give her (him) your area code and phone number. (假如你要對方付錢，首先撥個「0」，告訴接線生，你要打由對方付錢的長途電話，同時告訴他地區號碼和電話號碼。) (註：collect call 是指由對方付錢的長途電話，如果對方不肯接受，接線生就不肯為你接通。) 好心人可能還會解釋說： “Person-to-person” is more expensive than “station-to-station”. If the person on the other line accepts your call, you can talk to the person right away . But if you dial directly, first dial： “1”, and area code, and then the phone number. The operator will tell you how much to put into the slot. (「指定某人說話」要比「接通就好」貴些。對方願意接受的話，就可馬上通話了。不過直撥的話，只要先撥「1」，再撥地區號碼和電話號碼就行了。接線生會告訴你要放進多少硬幣。) (註：area code 是美國的地區號碼，通常是三個號碼，放在電話號碼前面。) 假如你實在有困難打不通，也可請人代勞。但要記得，對人家的幫忙，要說聲謝謝： Thanks a lot. (Sorry to bother you.) (就在你的左邊角落) (註：男廁叫 men's room，女廁叫 ladies' room 或 powder room；但男女廁所統稱為 restroom (在美國很少稱其為 W.C.) ；有的公廁設有硬幣的孔口 (slot) ，放進硬幣後，才能打開門。美國公廁多有衛生紙等免費供應，不必自備。) 5. 叫計程車： (taking a taxi) 如果機場附近有計程車，你可問司機： Sir (Maam) , how much will it cost if you take me to the nearest hotel/motel? (你帶我到附近的旅館，要多少錢？) 司機也許說： About 20 bucks (dollars.) But the meter will tell you the exact amount. (大約廿元，不過碼表會告訴你準確的數目。) 你也可以問： How can I find an economical hotel/motel nearby? (我如何在附近找個經濟實惠的旅社？) 由於「基督教青年會」通常有便宜房間出租，所以也可以問： Where is the YMCA located? (青年會在那裡？) (注意：美國大城市環境較為複雜，問路或請人幫忙，最好找附近的警衛人員，以免受騙。叫黃色計程車 (yellow cab) ，較安全，信譽也較好。) 你決定後，可對司機說： Okay, will you please take the shortest way possible? (可否請你走捷徑？) 司機也許說： I will try. 假如機場附近沒有計程車，你可以打電話到計程車公司： Is this a taxi company? I need a cab right now. I will be standing near the entrance of US Airlines at Dulles Airport. (這是計程車公司嗎？我現在需要一部計程車。我正在Dulles機場的US Airlines的出口處等候。) 你不妨可附加一句： You will see an Asian man with glasses standing there with two suitcases. I am sure you can identify me without any problem.
