The seccess of Metal gear is that the game was based on totally mature theme. It was rated 17+ in North America. Not just for its blood and violence, also for the absolute adult's philosophical view to the world. Then entire game is very serious. All about the issues might heppen or are happening to our world. Well, serious isn't mean it's not funny. There are few very obvious jokes blent into the story. But the story telling is done in a way of more trerifying, every plot, every twist is actually heartfelt, and of course, amazing.
So for the Final fantsy series, there is nothing as serious as Metalgear. I'm not saying FF isn't as good as MGS, but the overall feeling seemed somewhat childish in FF.
Since action isn't one main factor in FFs, the only way we can learn the characters is through their dialogues. Again, I'll be comparing FFs on playstation only.
VII is one exceptional. With a might-be-true theory applied, the game seemed to be a little bit of serious. Barret, one serious talker, yelling"I'll kick these shinra ass" which can't be used in TV programs that is showed on prime time. The way characters in FF VII talked is the most I've enjoyed. I read through these dialogues again and again and just can't get enough of them.
In VIII, things started not to make any sense. For the main characters, all under age of 20, dreesed weird, and talks like kids. I went through VIII for maybe three or four times, and now I'm on the one last time. I just can't go on like I was when I first bought this game. The dialogues are boring and childish. I got tired of reading them line by line. I guess the U.S version is badly translated.
Then the IX. I have mixed feelings about IX. Zidane is some sort of Mr. Casanova, until he met the pricess. Vivi and the little girl are really kids. But never talked like one. Freya and Steiner are typical knights types, too serious. The weird guy and the weird creature either don't talk much, or don't speak proper english, so I really can't say nothing about these two. But for Princess Garnet, the Dagger, her dialogue is perfectly written. She just stands out from rest of the crews. There are many jokes that I couldn't stop laughing. But with all these types of personalities mixed together, I really don't know what is going on.
Well, maybe this is fantasy, we shouldn't take things seriously. But hell, I would love to see one final fantasy presents pure adult and mature themes. We are taking this game seriously, why shouldn't the developers make them serious? You know the scene in X when Tidus and Yuna were swimming under the water? When I was watching it, I thought it would be better if it is a sex scene. Don't laugh,I'm serious. |
