*start*
The trip started like an adventure, My college friend and I left GZ on
Sept.30th night. The bus should depart at 7:30pm, but since it was th
e beginning of the holidays, many people chose the time to start their
trips, so there were too many people in the bus station, and the stat
ion had sold out many more extra tickets than the real quantity of the
beds on the bus, therefore crowded people stayed in the bus not willi
ng to leave. The ticket to Guilin is RMB117, but the extra ticket is R
MB200 without bed(sitting in the narrow space between the 2 rows of be
d, each bed was double bed for 2 passengers). A man(maybe the one who
sold the extra tickets) spent almost an hour to ask most of the extra
people off the bus. When the bus finally departed, it was almost 9:00p
m, and it still loaded about 7 extra people. One of them was sitting r
ight beside my bed, I hated the feeling that a strange guy sitting bes
ide my bed when I was lying in bed, not to say the guys smoked a lot a
s I was sleeping.:-( But nothing I could do for that. A man even wante
d to sit at the edge of my bed(they said he was one of the drivers),
I had to fight for refusing his invading my private sleep space, thoug
h I don't like quarrel and they(some guys from Guilin and YangShuo) th
ought I was strange and selfish. During the night such quarrels happen
ed 4 times in different beds.
We rent 2 bikes right after we got to YangShuo, till we left for home.
The bike was a useful tool in YangShuo. We lived in a hostel in the m
ain street of YangShuo: Xi Jie. Also because it was the holiday time,
Yangshuo was crowded and the rooms were tight. We rent a *double room*
with bath room, actually we were in the living room of a 2 bed rooms'
suite. That means the people in the 2 bed rooms would pass through ou
r beds when they were going in or out. I have never lived in such a ro
om like that before(especially when another room was full of only guys
--westerners), it's no privacy, but also a new and exciting experience
for us.
The next day after we arrived in, we hired a local tour guide, togethe
r with a pair in their 50's from Holland, rode the bicycles to the vil
lages. There was a place with large lakes on the way impressed me much
, it was very quiet, peaceful and beautiful, the lakes were very clean
. I had the desire to swim there when we stopped there and took a coup
le of pictures. The country roads were very bumpy, covered with rocks,
and the guide rode quite fast, I think if the ridding skill is not go
od enough, it would be easy to get some little accidents. *_* We saw
the villages and ancient house which was built in Ming Dynasty, climbe
d the Moon Hill, went to the cave...I like the cave we went to though
it was quite expensive(RMB50), it was mostly natural(quiet, no tour gr
oups), and had some adventure under ground of other caves among this c
ave.
Then the next day we took the ship with bicycles, going up the river f
or the scenery along Li Jiang River. Then we got off about 25km away f
rom Yangshuo, ridding the bicycle back to the hostel, it took us 2 hou
rs to ride back. The countryside scenery along the road was very nice,
though I felt it was not very different from my hometown. :-) In the
end of this trip, there was a long tunnel about 100 metres long. When
we got there, it was about half past six in the afternoon and the sky
had been getting dark. When I just rode in the tunnel, I found there w
as no light in it, I was just like suddenly thrown into the darkness,
could only see the light on the other side of the tunnel, but totally
couldn't see if I was ridding in the middle of the road or on the side
, I could only know that when a car or truck suddenly ran by with thei
r lights. But the lights appeared and disappeared so fast as the autom
obiles running through, so it became so unreal, the bicycle was like f
lying on the cloud, the feeling was so strange, excited(I yelled out w
ith the Dutch man *_*) and maybe also a little scared. I was ridding b
ehind the Dutch pair, I heard the woman kept calling her husband's nam
e after him, I knew she was scared, her husband responded in the front
and yelled excited. I was touched by their calling and responsing to
each other. When we were out of the tunnel, we stopped and found Chen
Yu(the girl who came to Yangshuo with me) and another girl who had joi
ned our trip were stop ridding and walked passing the tunnel.
We were all tired after 2 days' trips, but I wanted to swim in Li Jian
g River before leaving. So Chen Yu and I went to rent a wood boat out,
with the girl who had rode with us, and her (boy)friend. I had worn s
wim suit inside, so I took off the T-shirt and pants jumping into Li J
iang. It was quiet around, I swam in the moonlight, the girl's friend
sat at the end of the boat and played the flute, the other 2 girls jus
t sat on the boat enjoying the night. Finally Chen Yu couldn't refuse
the temptation of swimming, she changed in my T-shirt and pants to joi
n me, haha, I think it was her first time changing clothes in public *
_*, had to ask the man turn over his head still. After the swim, I had
to wear my wet clothes walking on Xi Jie back to the hostel, it was t
he time all the people sitting at the tables of cafes out in the stree
t, it was a little embarrassing, but also fun to be strange.
I would like to go back there for some days if I get the chance next t
ime. I don't even know why, since it's not more beautiful than Jiu Zha
i Gou of Sichuan I have been to, though it also has nice scenery along
the Li Jiang. I think I like the feeling of living there, free, relax
, and a little adventure, and the feeling of sitting at the table of o
ne of the cafes out on the Xi Jie. It's a pity that few Chinese people
know Yang Shuo is a very good place worth staying for days, generally
the tour groups mainly go to Guilin, only go to Yangshuo for couple h
ours as one of spots. So you can see there are more western tourists t
han Chinese travellers there, and all the cafes and hostels write adve
rtising and menu mainly in English. I can say every local people you m
eet in Xi Jie can speak some English. *End*
The following is the Chinese version which is translated from my origi
nal contents by a friend of mine.
