After a long day of negociations between the riders, the team managers and the Giro organistaion, the Tour of Italy will carry on until Milan, its official final destination. "In the light of the debate held, and with the aim of saving the values of cycling, the riders have decided they will finish the 84th Giro D'Italia," the cyclists said in a statement. "They will do it knowing to have worked towards building a serene and dignified future with all the relative governing bodies of the sport."
Based on the fact that five teams, Alexia, Lampre, Panaria Ceramiche, Liquigas and Selle Italia had decided to continue, the rest of the teams will not pull out of the event.
According to Fassa Bortolo team manager Ferreti, either all the riders accepted to stop the race, or it would carry on. As the final decision was far from being unanimous, the last 3 stages of the 84th Giro d'Italia will take place.
Organisers had earlier cancelled Thursday's 18th stage of the race, when riders called an emergency meeting to discuss whether to abandon this year's event after the police raids during the night.
After the cyclist held a meeting for much of the day, Enrico Ingrilli, the president of the Italian riders association, said the riders had decided to continue with the tour on Friday.
The original decision to cancel stage 18 and threaten to stop the Giro came after a night in which police men raided the hotel rooms of a number of riders as part of their investigations into doping.
According to our on site crew, this police operation concerned 400 men from all over Italy, including Sicily.
Italian news agency ANSA quoted police sources as saying substances including testosterone, caffeine, adrenal and anabolic steroids and other stimulants had been seized.
