Although they lived in the same city and were classmates in China, she and he didn't have a lot of time to meet. Last Friday she called him and told him that she had made her mind finally and would divorce with her husband. He was really shocked.
They were sitting outside of a small and quiet Mexican Restaurant. It was a very nice sunny day outside. He looked close at her and tried to figure out how she was so different from that college girl he remembered almost 10 years ago. "It has been almost one year since we met last time. Is that right?" asked he, gazing at her. "Yeah. It is so fast." replied she, "It has been the 7th year when I came here." She said emotionally. "I can still remember the day when we took the TOFEL test together. That day was not very cold; but I felt cold because I was so nervous." she laughed, pausing for a while, "How is your family?" asked she. "Oh. They are doing well." answered he. "You are a lucky man!" she said, sadly looking at him and giving him a weak smile. "Yes, I am." he replied quietly.
There was a silence.
"You have married for over 8 years. Are you sure you want to divorce?" He started his question directly. "Yeah, I am looking for an attorney to help me." answered she. "The first two months were full of happiness in my life when my husband came here to visit me. After that short period things seemed to back to normal. It was too normal for me. No romance. No excitement. I couldn't bear what he brought to me. Actually I hadn't feel anything new from him although we were apart for almost two years." she told him sadly, "But he is a good man. He is kind and working really hard. But he ..." her eyes became misty. Bright sunlight streamed over her shoulders, backlighting her pretty dark eyes, making her first few tears actually twinkle.
Again there was a silence.
"Why? I cannot understand why you want to divorce?" asked he, "You were thought as a perfect couple in our graduate school when we were in China? Remember that?" asked he. She nodded, "Yeah! A perfect couple!" she muttered quietly, "A perfect marriage is boring; but an unperfected marriage is painful." she said calmly with a shrug.
She bit her lip, looked down, and smoothed her purple skirt with one hand and with the other waved a wisp of dark hair off her forehead, as if trying to brush away a little sadness along with it. "Thing has been changing!" said she, "He is no long the man I used to love. He'd no long make me happy any more." she continued in a pained voice.
"Did you two fight?" asked he. She shook her head, "We had nothing to fight." she paused, "I wish we could fight sometimes and after the fight he could come to me and say sorry to me! Our fighting only happened in the first year of our marriage." said she.
"But how did you suddenly know that?" He asked with a surprise. "Because I'd met another man who could!" She pulled out that man's picture from her purse. "He's my soul mate," she told him, eyes shining when she said this man's name. "Oh, I'd love that breathless feeling, those magic and unforgettable moments, and sleepless nights. This man could provide me all of these and bring me back to my colorful years. That's what I am looking for! That's what I have been waiting for a long time." she said with an unspeakably happy smile, "That's my wish!" she said, and stopped, even though words were crowding her mind.
"What about one year or two years later? Will this man still be able to provide you what you want?" He asked suddenly. She eyes became a little bit dim. She was silent for almost one minute, "I just know he could do it now! I haven't thought about one year later yet." Her expression became strangely stiff. Her watery gaze unbroken, she answered the question with the rawest, most emotionally naked statement he had ever heard, "I need love!" she continued, "I...I just want to enjoy these wonderful feelings now. I don't care about the future. I have been watching my youth fading away quickly. You should know that the youth is so important for a woman." Her tears spilled onto her beautiful skirt.
"I cannot think a little bit further! Do you know thinking kills the love?" she raised her eyebrows, her eyes glued to a free-flying bird in the blue sky. He nodded and answered with silence.
