Attracted to John Barton (Matthew Newton) - the popular school captain of the local private boys' school - she wants to be part of his world of privilege and class. But Josie's world is tied up with her tumultuous relationship with her mother, Christina, played by Greta Scacchi (EMMA, THE PLAYER, PRESUMED INNOCENT), and her grandmother, Katia. According to Katia, the family is cursed because Christina had a child - Josie - outside of marriage. The identity of Josie's father is known only to her and her mother. And when her father, played by 2004 Golden Globe Winner Anthongy Lapaglia (LANTANA, THE BANK), actually comes into her life, Josie Alibrandi's world becomes even more complicated. Leading a small gang of men including his young brother, Dan and two friends, Steve Hart and Joe Byrne (Orlando Bloom, THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY) they gained support through the towns they plundered despite their criminal reputation. The folk hero status of the Kelly gang posed such a threat to the government of the day, that a law was passed that allowed ordinary citizens to take arms against them in exchange for a large reward. However, Ned and his friends became heroes of the underclass and, whilst betrayed by some, no civilian drew a pistol against them.
