Iris is probably the best undiscovered songwriter the US has to offer. His
songs reek of class and maturity and have haunting melodies and fantastic
lyrics. Although he scored a top twenty hit in 1980 with ‘Ah Lear’ – a
record which had over eighty vocal overdubs – he has still to receive the
recognition he truly deserves. All his records are worthy or purchase.

With the ongoing disintegration, wherher by default or purely by design, of
Warlock, singer Dorothy Pesch assumed control of the band in 1988, by changing
its name simply to Doro. By this time, the band had been reduced to a nucleus
of her, bassist Tommy Hendrickson and guitarist Tommy Bolin. Indeed, by the
time of recording Force Majeur, even this line-up had begun to disintegrate,
making way for an all-session contribution on the mid-1990 release of Doro.
Unfortunately for Doro she has continued to move away from her roots, shunning
the early blistering heavy rock that secured her and Warlock much praise,
turning instead towards sophisticated pop rock of the kind peddled by Lita
Ford and Saraya. The focus of this twist in approach appears to have been an
effort to attract a broader audience, but ironically her last two records have
been met with little more than polite applause and even less sales. Which is
a shame, because she is a singer with great talent and potential if channelled
in the right musical direction.

Jerry Doucette is a Canadian axe-hero who is renowned as Canada’s
greatest slide guitarist. His albums contain good hard rockers
with a subtle blend of keyboards. His LPs appear at spasmodic
intervals, his latest appearing in 1981.

Incredible progressive-metal outfit with immense dexterity, calling to mind
the best spine-tingling moments of Rush, Kansas, Dixie Dreggs and ELP.
Tremendous musicianship exudes throughout and the group can safely be
recommended as a fine and perhaps the best example of advanced techo rock
currently in circulation. By rights they ought to be huge.

Extreme hard-core act originating from Texas and formed in early 1982.
Their early recordings drew from British punk rock roots, echoing the
crunch of the Sex Pistols and the Clash but played at a Ramones/Dickkies
speed. By the mid-eighties the band, having been cited by Slayer’s
drummer Dave Lombardo as a major influence, moved more noticeably towards
a metal direction and proceeded to attract a large crossover audience
feeding off the rapidly rising thrash rock movement. Ostensibly an
acquired taste but moving steadily to the mainstream as time progresses.

This is a powerful Canadian three-piece with a great line in short, punchy,
three-minute hard-rock songs. Their album is an undiscvoered classic.

Excellent melodic rock outfit brough together by ex-Touch mainman Mark
Mangold and unknown supervocalist Alan Fritsh. The music is very much
an AOR dream, with every song exuding clean, powerful vocals and superb
hooklines. Highly recommended to lovers of tasteful melodies and carefully
constructed songs.

A New York guitarist who has built up quite a reputation for himself
culminating in a Jack Douglas-produced solo LP, recorded live in the
studio. For a while he joined Aerosmith but left the group in 1984.

Dkuke Jupiter started their career as an extremely bland AOR outfit.
Duke Jupiter 1 saw a new label and change in direction. They now
sound like a very tough, rough ’n’ raw Rec Speedwagon circa Nine Lives.
Recommended.

This band is on the same level as Bang. Aaronson joined Derringer,
amongst others, and Bell is the drummer with the Ramones. Both Dust’s
albums are good hard rock, with string work noticeable now and again.

Heavy US-style radio rock with good guitar and vocal harmonies. Their
cover versions are much favoured, with Tommy Bolin’s ‘Teaser’ as one of
their main pieces. John Bolin is Tommy’s brother.
