ASAP (UK)
Adrian Smith: vocals, guitar
Andy Barnett: guitar
Dave Colwell: guitar
Robin Clayton: bass
Richard Young: keyboards
Zak Starkey: drums
Pieced together by guitarist Adrian Smith whilst enjoying down time from
Britain's biggest metal band, Iron Maiden. The project first evolved from a
sporadic jam session at London's Marquee Club in 1986 under the moniker
of The Entire Population of Hackney. Having accumulated a clutch of
material unsuitable for Maiden, Smith hit upon the notion of recording these
songs as part of an ongoing project with assistance from a variety of musical
friends (including Andy Barnett from his first band, Urchin). The result was
a mainstream rock record with little in common with the screaming histrionics
of Iron Maiden. Not without prior speculation. Smith was subsequently relieved
of his duties with Maiden shortly after ASAP's release.

ASHTON (UK)
Mark Ashton first came to prominence as original lead vocalist of late
sixties/early seventies UK Progressive rockers Rare Bird who scored
a multi- platinum hit with their 'Sympathy' 45. He split to form the less
successful Headstone in 1974 and subsequently released two low-key
solo LPs before securing a deal with RCA and releasing Modern Pilgrims,
merging futuristic concepts with an intimidating hard-rock approach
and exceptional production. Mark won sensational critical acclaim, but
the LP failed to make commercial inroads and he was subsequently
dropped from the RCA roster. Recommended.

ASIA (UK)
John Wetton: vocals, bass
Steve Howe: guitar
Geoffrey Downes: keyboards
Carl Palmer: drums
Asia is tagged with the label of being the first supergroup of the 1980s.
Howe and Downes were originally members of Yes: Palmer played with
Emerson, Lake and Palmer; Wetton came from Family, Roxy Music and
Uriah Heep. Asia's musical style is an amalgam of all their previous outfits,
but given a smooth basic AOR feel by producer Mike Stone of Journey
fame. The debut album scored a huge sucdess in both tht UK and US
markets. Wetton left in 1983 to be replaced by Greg Lake but in 1985 he
left to reform ELP. Wetton has returned.
Howe was replaced by Mandy Meyer fore the third album. Downes left in
1986, and the band ground to a halt but reformed in 1989. Then and Now
consisted live okl and five new cuts with the line-up of Wetton, Palmer,
Downes and Pat Thrall.

ASSASSIN (UK)
Traditional home-brewed heavy rock from the early 70s and one of the
first HM bands to release a full album on an independent basis. Musically
they span between Free and Uriah Heep calling at most points in between.
Pinnacle (Stag Music) 1974
ATOMIC ROOSTER (UK)
Vincent Crane: organ
Nick Graham: bass
Carl Palmer: drums
Keyboards- dominated hard-rock band. Crane and Palmer were former
members of the Arthur Brown Group. Crane was co- writer of that band's
faous hit 'Fire'. Atomic Rooster was formed in 1969 but Palmer soon
departed to form Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Other changes in personnel
followed. John Cann, guitar and vocals; Paul Hammond, drums; Johnny
Mandata, guitar and Rick Parnell, drums were among the 'ins' and 'outs'.
Chris Farelowe joined and left in 1973 but sang vocals on Nice 'n' Greasy.
Cann wrote ' Devil's Answer', a chart hit single in 1971, and the same year
saw 'Tomorrow Night' also achieve chart placing. A resurrected group
appeared in 1982 with Crane, Cann and Hammond. Crane died in 1989.

ATOMKRAFT (UK)
Ian Swift: vocals
Tony Dolan: guitar
Rob Matthews: guitar
D. C. Rage: bass
Ged Wolf: drums
Now defunct, but of interest for being one of the first British groups to play
thrash metal, following firmly in the footsteps of bad taste left by fellow
Newcastle residents and black- metal pioneers Venom. Ironically in 1989
leader Tony Dolan left Atomkraft to take up a place in the newly reformed
Venom.
Future Warriors (Neat) 1985

Conductors of Noise (Neat) 1987
ATROPHY (USA)
Brian Zimmerman: vocals
Rick Skowron: guitar
Chris Lykins: guitar
James Gulotta: bass
Tim Kelly: drums
Zimmerman and Lykins founded this outfit after initially deciding on the
name Heresy. Thash metal is their genre, though not of the mindnumbing
kind, since among the few in this idiom they respect lyrics and tunes that
have some variety. The group personnel listed is the one that dates from
their recordings, and by the early nineties they were chasing Sacred Reich
to qualify as the best outfit from Arizona.
Socialized Hate (Roadrunner) 1988
Violent By Nature (Roadrunner) 1990
AUTOGRAPH (USA)
Steve Plunkett: vocals
Steve Lynch: guitar
Steven Isham: keyboards
Randy Rand: bass
Keni Richards: drums
Tight, competent and extremely well- conceived pop rock contaning a host
of experienced musicians; Rand (Lita Ford, Masters of The Airways), Plunkett
(Silver Condor) and Steve Isham (Holly Penfield). Scored massive hit single
in spring 1985 in America with 'Turn up the Radio' and toured extensively
with Van Halen.
Their 1987 album was filled with gorgeous material. They became a four-
piece when Isham departed to team up with ex- Dio guitarist Craig Goldie.
Sadly, real fame, though deserved, has not been their lot and the band
split in 1989

AUTOMATIC MAN (USA)
Bayette: keyboards, vocals
Pat Thrall: guitar
Donni Harvey: bass
Mike Shreve: drums
This band was more experimental than most. The covers of their two LPs
are the same image but in different colours. Most of the tracks are keyboard-
orientated, but with Thrall's guitar coming to the fore at times. When the
band split up Thrall joined Pat Travers's band, and went on to team up with
Glen Hughes (ex- Deep Purple) in Hughes- Thrall band.

Visitors (Island) 1977
AVALON (Canada)
Myles Hunter: vocals
Tullio Gravata: guitar
Brian Sim: guitar
Manfred Heid Ecker: bass
Robrt Holtz: drums
Pomp of the first degree. Avalon's music is similar to that of Styx and Zon.
They made one LP, then vanished into obscurity.
Voice of Life (London) 1977
AVALON (USA)
Chris Cote: keyboards, vocals
Rick Neigher: guitar, vocals
Mike Mirage: guitar, keyboards
Session musicians completed the band's line-up for the recording of a
four- track EP, 'Everyman is a King', for Capitol in 1982. They play in the
Styx style with lots of atmosphere and feeling.
AVENGER (UK)
Brian Ross: vocals
Steve Bird: guitar
Mick Moore: bass
Gary Young: drums
Another of Neat Records' discoveries, Avenger featured on the 'Live in the
Studio' EP which is also titled 'One Take No Dubs'. In common with many
of Neat's roster, Avenger play metal loud and bass- ridden. Young was
replaced in 1986 by the American Darren Kurland.
Blood Sport (Neat) 1984
Killer Elite (Neat) 1985
AVIARY (USA)
Brad Love: keyboards, vocals
Paul Madden: keyboards
Ken Steinmont: bass, vocals
Toby Bowen: guitar
Richard Batans: drums
Despite looking very butch on the cover of their LP (there are two different
covers), Aviary's music is weak and more akin to soft pomp than heavy
metal. Love recorded a solo album in 1982.
Aviary (Epic) 1979
AVION (Australia)
Randall Waller: vocals
Martin Tode: guitar
Even Murray: keyboards
Kendall Waller: bass
John Waller: drums
Slightly droning AOR is inflicted on the listener of their first album, with
the band's derivations seemingly in the Boston and Night Ranger camp.
By the second album, Paul Gannel had replaced Tode on guitar, and a
much better release was forthcoming. The band's partnership with EMI
was short- lived.
Avion (RCA) 1983
White Noise (EMI) 1987
AXE (USA)
Edgar Riley: vocals
Mike Osbourne: guitar
Bobby Barth: guitar
Mike Turpin: bass
Teddy Mueller: drums
Although looking like Texan boogie merchants, Axe play a fine style of
melodic rock/pomp. All the members in the band except Osbourne were
previously in Babyface. They gained moderate acclaim but hit tragedy when
Riley was killed in an horrific car crash in 1984. The band subsequently
split with Barth moving to a revitalized Blackfoot in 1985. Barth reformed
the band four years later, with Andy Parker, ex- UFO.

AXE VICTIMS (Germany)
Tom Bohn: guitar
Frank Fanfare: vocals
Rowland Hag: guitar
Martin Rocco: guitar
Holgar George: bass
Interesting melodic metal unit from West Germany influenced by AC/DC
and Krokus. The hard- rocking 'Shoot from the Stars' is the band's best
track.
Another Victim (Mausoleum) 1984
Hyphotised (Mausoleum) 1985
AXIS (USA)
Danny Johnson: guitar, vocals
Jay Davis: bass, vocals
Vinny Appice: drums
Formed after Derringer split up, all the musicians in this band have now
moved elsewhere. Appice joined Black Sabbath; Johnson and Davis
went to Silver Condor. It's a Circus World is excellent basic hard rock but
is now only available in Japan.
It's a Circus World (RCA) 1978
AXIS POINT (UK)
Eddie Hardin: vocals, keyboards
Charlie Whitney: guitar
Charlie McCraken: bass
Rob Townsend: drums
The band is made up of well- known session men and some ex- Family
members. Boast of the Town is good power rock. Axis Point is rubbish.

BRYAN ADAMS (Canada)
Incredibly talented singer-songwriter Bryan Adams has found enormous
success. His debut album made inroads into the Canadian charts, an
area he had known as a member of Sweeney Todd. You Want It You Got
It secured his Canadaian position and opened the USA to pave the way
for the enormous-selling Cuts Like a Knife opus. Obviously his best work,
the album climbed the North American charts rapidly and songs like
'Take Me Back', 'I'm Ready' and 'This Time' became radio standards.
Reckless helped him crack Europe and he subsequently gained massive
critical acceptance as he toured as support to Tina Turner. As a songwriter
Adams is unique in his ability to pen poignant lyrics dressed in brilliant
catchy melodies. On the other hand there are many who find his music
bland and predictable, albeit commercial. Adams owes much to the
fine guitar work of Keith Scott and bass ability of Dave Taylor. Towards
the end of the eighties, Adams lost much of his momentum.

LEE AARON (Canada)
This lady is an outstanding vocalist. Her introductory album went out
under the banner of the Lee Aaron Project and featured a selection of
well-known Canadian rock musicians (members of Moxy, Reckless,
Santers, Frank Soda and Wrabit, etc) playing songs specifically written
for the occasion. With her identity sold, albeit sexually, her reputation
has spread across the world and gained her the necessary media
exposure to the point where she looks set for major recognition. Visits
to the UK (first in 1983) and Europe (support to Bon Jovi,1985) have
added to the buzz. She has been able to form a more resilient and
permanent backing band. Metal Queen is a vast improvement on the
debut album, but Call of the Wild is as complete hard rock as you'll
likely hera - taut rhythm, fiery guitar and totally unrestrained vocal
gymnastics. Her 1987 album made greater use of keyboards, and overall
was a much lighter affair than previously, although the album did contain
some powerful ballads that surprisingly did not find single success. Her
last release of the decade was rather uninspiring, and she failed to move
into the nineties as the once much-touted star.

THE ALMIGHTY (UK)
Ricky Warwick: vocals
Tantrum: guitar
Floyd London: bass
Stump Monroe: drums
Blood-curdling British rock outfit in the mind-numbing tradition of
Motorhead and Tank. Solid wall of guitars with agonising vocals,
and a thunderous rhythm section. Surprisingly they have songs,
many quite hummable, and appear to be leading something of a
resurgence of interest in British heavy rock. Conceivably a band
that should in the fullness of time go places.
