Intrinsically British-sounding hard rock quintet much in the traditional
bump 'n' grind mould of Whitesnake and Deep Purple. Formed during
the eighties, in the Southampton area, the band were originally known
as XS before changing their line-up and name to After Hours, and
releasing a debut AOR-flavoured LP. Subsequent but sporadic live
appearances confirm the band's heavier direction with vocalist John
Francis sounding not unlike a classic combination of David Coverdale
and Paul Rodgers. The band's latest line-up includes keyboard player
Andy Nye (ex-MSG) and drummer Alan Jackman (ex-The Outfield).

Iron Maiden-influenced, they were formed by ex-Abattoir vocalist Cyriis.
Post 1987 only Cyriis and Profus remained from the original line-up. And
when the band ceased operations in March 1988, both joined Pontius
Prophet for what proved a stay of less than six months, as that group
too folded.

From Manchester, A II Z were Polydor's token north- west NWOBHM
band with one rather duff live album to their credit. They had a 12- inch
single, 'No Fun After Midnight', accompanied by considerable company
Girlschool tours of 1980. The band made little impact and they split in
1981. Gary Owens joined Tytan.

Commanding melodic rock played with an intensity that is totally baffling
considering they originate from the UK. This inconsistency is, however,
clarified in the production by American Beau Hill who injects a sense of
relentless memorability throughout. Uppermost in the crush for attention
was vocalist Keith Murrell - a tremendous voice. Amazingly, the band split
up in 1985.
A momentary splutter of life came in 1986, although only Mansworth
remained from the line-up given

Built around the talented guitar playing of Bernie Marsden, previously
with Babe Ruth and Whitesnake. Although Marsden's career has been
centred in traditional bluesesque confines Alaska's direction is more
mainstream, veering towards the Ameican AOR dream. Yet it's not all
a unified direction as the standardized fledgling shuffles of other (often
Whitesnake) directions creep through the window on far too many
occasions. Obviously Marsden shines on the group's records but of
particular note is the simply phenomenal voice of Hawthorn: it can be
high-pitched yet beautifullycroaky! Marter was previously with Mr Big
and Marillion.
The future was decidely uncertain. Hawthorn announced his departure
early in 1986 and that seemed to herald the end. Marsden in company
with Neil Murray and Mel Galley joined MGM for a rather short-lived affair
with that band, folding in 1988

Outwardly Alcatrazz possessed the right ingredients for success, and while
they attracted a following, they did not clearly stamp their identity upon the
rock world. Formed by Bonnet after his 1983 fracas with Michael Schenker
and MSG, the band originally had the benefits of Yngwie Malmsteen's wild
guitar work. By 1984 he had left and was replaced by another technical
fretboard wizard Stevie Vai fresh from Frank Zapp's band. The music is
chemically accurate but tends to filter through a mixture of cliches that
swamp any individuality. They were appreciated espcially in Japan. Waldo
and Shea were ex-New England while Uvena had previously drummed
with Alice Cooper.
Vai left for Dave Lee Roth's group, and was replaced by Danny Johnson,
ex-Axis. The group split up in1987.

ALEXA (USA)
Born in Switzerland, later moving to Los Angeles, Alexa Anastasia was
discovered by Only Child leader Paul Sabu who subsequently produced
her debut solo album. Fusing brutal heavy rock with intelligent melodies
and lasting hooks, not to mention stunning looks, Alexa showed herself
to be a serious rival to established metallers Lee Aaron, Sandi Saraya and
Lita Ford. A truly gifted performer but she has seemingly disappeared from
the scene of late.

Alice Cooper (born Vincent Furnier, 1948, Detroit) is perhaps the
greatestever ever single showman to have emerged within the
framework of hard rock. His outrageous stage shows, his thoroughly
bizarre public behaviour and his eccentric but brutal records have
afforded him a place in the history books of rock that will never be
rivalled. Simply, he was an originator, an innovator of that form of
shock rock which has fuelled artists as far afield as Kiss and Adam
Ant. Perfect. The line-up above is his most famous and certainly his
most creative.
Moving to Hollywood in 1968, Cooper and band quickly established
themselves as an outrageous live act attracted the cream of th Los
Angeles liggers and hangers-on. It was here that they recorded their
first two albums before moving back to Detroit and hooking up with
producer Bob Ezrin who guided them into the American charts with
a superb, rough 'n' raunchy production. It was at this time they began
to tour using weird stage props such as boaconstrictors, electric chairs
and gallows. This, of course, led to public outrage and soon they became
the biggest grossing box-office draw in America. A string of excellent
albums followed, spawning great hit singles such as 'I am Eighteen',
'School's Out', 'Elected' and 'No More Mr Nice Guy'. Unfortunately, the
more Cooper delved into the obscure and bizarre the more a self-parody
he became. The first signs of his downfall occurred when he disbanded
his long-serving band. Of the new recruits only the guitar team of Dick
Wagner and Steve Hunter were effective. Welcome to My Nightmare, the
first recording by his new outfit, was excellent but all his subsequent
work fell far short of his earlier triumphs. Occasionally, as with the single
'Only Women Bleed', he did achieve critical praise but as the years moved
on it was obvious Cooper had seen the end of his massive success. In
1981 Cooper toured the UK to good reaction and experienced a small
rekinding of adulation, mostly on a nostalgia level.
He built upon this, and to some degree his career took on th appearance
of a solid and profitable revival. Ladies Man is a 'live' set recorded in
Toronto, and was repackaged for the UK market with several of the
included numbers not found on mainline released albums. Trash with
songs co-written with Desmond Child continued his upsurge.

Stunning Americanized melodic rock with similarities to Survivor,
Nightranger, and Foreigner. Formed in Sweden during 1987, the
band initially came to prominence when their debut single 'Only
One Woman' (previously a sixties chart hit for Graham Bonnett)
went straight to No.1 in the Swedish national charts. The subsequent
LP, produced in Los Angeles, continued the success, but disaster
struck on the eve of worldwide release when singer Jim Gidhead
left the band. By early 1989 a replacement had been found in the
shape of Peter Sandberg, but momentum halted abruptly, and the
band subsequently split up when further personal upheavals
developed over the direction of new material.

Excellent shock-rock band from New York who lasted just long enough
to release a mini-LP before splitting due to personal differences. Rik 'J.J.'
Kristi and Frank Starr promptly teamed up with former Steeler bassist
Rik Fox in Los Angeles. Bardot left in 1986, and faced at the time a charge
of first-degree murder and burglary.

Stevens is an English-born Australian who returned to the UK in search
of a deal. Success came with the discovery of a small-time band from
Maidstone called Alkatrazz. Their music a good blend of melodic hard
rock which is similar to UFO and April Wine. They took a more American
direction in Radio 5 and this has worked to their advantage. Unfortunately
they were dropped by RCA.

This famed Southern rock boogie band suffered a major setback on 29
October 1971, when their main guitarist Duane Allman died in a motorcycle
accident at the age of twenty-four. The twin guitars of Allman and Betts
was a major factor in their distinctive sound. Although the band won a
huge following in the US their support on the other side of the Atlantic
has been sadly confined to a minority. To all intents and purposes the
band folded in 1981 but in 1989 they played through the States as twentieth
anniversary tour. This proved a catalyst for a new album with the introduction
of three new members. Haynes (guitar) and Neel (keyboards) had been
members of the Dickey Betts Band, while Neel had also toured with the
Gregg Allman Band. Woodly had worked with Artimus Pyle, the drummer
for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Of the basic Allman Brothers set-up there remained
Greg Allman, Betts, and later members Butch Trucks and Jaimoe, the two
drummers very much part of the group's rhythmic sound. During the interim
period both Betts and Allman recorded albums with their respective bands.

The world's best undiscovered pomp band. Their songs are laden with
strutting bass and drum-work coupled with superb guitar/synth interplay.
The resulting album, Alpha Centauri, is so rich in melody and hard-rock
aggression that it is both tragic and absurd that it is not better known.
