Common Mantis Shrimp
These industrious and often colourful creatures are typically 6" long and have acquired their name by repeatedly hammering their prey using bony boxing gloves with a similar action used by the 'preying mantis'. Photographed at Gator Island, Malapascua, Philippines.
Anemone Shrimp (Periclimenes holthuisi)
In these shots one can see the individual eggs gleaming inside this transparent shrimp. In the first a pink anemone fish looks on cautiously. Photographed at Gator Island, Malapascua, Philippines.
Anemone Shrimp
This is one of my favourites as it looks like he's slouched drunk! Photographed at Manado, Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Sea Pen Lobster
This unusual animal is typical of this location. Photographed at Lembeh Straits, Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Swimmer Crab (Lissocarcinus laevis)
These rust red crabs are often found in and around anemones. Many of these synergist existences (called symbiosis) between critters and anemones are seen. It is thought that the crab gets protection from the anemones stinging cells, to which it is immune, and the anemone gets fallen scraps while the crab eats. Photographed at Manado, Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Gorgonian shrimp (Tozeuma armatum)
This is one of my favourite critters. The shrimp blends so well with its host and the combination of blue and cream is so attractive.
Lobster
This huge specimen had wedged itself between the bracings of the platform. It is the largest lobster I have seen at 40+cm head to tail and with such beautiful colours. I wanted more shots but was out of film! Photographed at AMWJ-21, Offshore Brunei..
Anemone Shrimp (Periclimenes brevicarpalis)
This is a common translucent critter that makes its home on various species of anemone. Photographed in Sulu Sea, Philippines.
Emperor Shrimp (Periclimenes imperator)
Sometimes found on sea cucumbers and larger sea slugs Photographed at Anemone Gardens, Miri, East Malaysia.
Soft Coral (Dendronephthya) Crab (Hoplophrys oatesii) & Soft Coral Cowry Shell
You will have to look closely as these miniatures (<0.5cm) are masters of disguise. Both in form, pattern and colour they blend perfectly. Photographed at Gator Island, Philippines.
Harlequin Shrimp (Hymenocera picta)
These brightly patterned and well armoured shrimps are a few cm in length and almost always are found in pairs with one sex being about 50% bigger than the other. They occupy a nook in the coral and feed on star fish which they stab and drag into there lair. This one can be seen defending its common blue starfish. Photographed at The barge, Puerto Gallera, Philippines.
Hingebeak Shrimp (Rhynchocinetes sp.)
These beautifully coloured shrimps can be easily found at night as its eyes shine in the beam of the torch. Photographed at Manado, Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Porcelain Crab (Neopetrolisthes sp.) Photographed at Manado, Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Painted Rock Lobster (Panulirus versicolor)
The most common species of lobster around Borneo. Photographed on platforms, Offshore Brunei.
Hingebeak Shrimp (Rhynchocinetes sp.?)
This one was found rummaging around on the sand at Chocolate Island, Malapascua, Philippines.
Anemone Shrimp (Periclimenes kororensis)
These well dressed shrimps are often numerous and almost always found in this type of bubble anemone. Photographed at Chocolate Island, Malapascua, Philippines.
Shrimp
Not sure about this one at the minute. Quiet common thoughout SE Asia. Imagine having arm that length! Photographed at Chocolate Island, Malapascua, Philippines.
Shrimp
This is a strange one as so many are in Lembeh. I think its a variation of the Hingebeak family. Photographed at Chocolate Island, Malapascua, Philippines.
Giant Mantis Shrimp (?)
Sat in its burrow (typically 10-15cm in diameter) its difficult to make out which is the front and back of the animal. Its strike is one of the fastest movements in nature. Someone tried filming the strike and when they replayed the film it was not present. Guess it must be quicker than 1/25 of a second then! Photographed in Lembeh Straits, Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Saron Shrimp (Saron sp.)
These shrimps are notoriously difficult to catch exposed as they cautiously hide amongst dense coral. This one shares its worries with a brittle star! Photographed at Sipadan Island, Malayisia.
Blue-spot rock lobster (Panulirus femoristriga)
I think this is a juvenile blue-spot rock lobster. If anyone knows any different let me know via the email link. Photographed on platforms, Offshore Brunei.
Hermit Crab (Dardanus sp.)
This is one species of a large family of crabs that have done away with their hard exoskeleton and instead use an appropriately sized disgarded shell to make their home. As they grow they just hop from one shell to a larger one. Bit like me and my trousers over the years! Photographed in Miri, Malaysia.
Seapen Crab (?)
Another animal adapted to live with a single type of host however, unlike many other symboyotic critters it does not always adopt the colour of the host. Photographed in Miri, Malaysia.
Crinoid Shrimp (Periclimenes amboinensis)
These shrimps are found exclusively on crinoids (or featherstars) and adopt the colour of the host. Photographed in Miri, Malaysia.
Anemone Shrimp (Periclimenes magnificus)
In this clear shot one can see the individual eggs gleaming inside this transparent shrimp as a pink anemone fish looks on cautiously. Photographed at Gator Island, Malapascua, Philippines.
Coral Shrimp (Dasycaris zanzibarica)
Similar to the Gorgonian shrimp this critter normally can be most easily found on whip corals. Photographed in Miri, Malaysia.
Starfish Shrimp (Periclimenes soror)
These alert miniatures (0.2-1cm) dart across their hosts' surface when approached. They are troublesome to shoot as they prefer to stay beneath near the sand line. Photographed in Miri, Malaysia.
