Danish band whose notoriey flourished when Warner Brothers Records
outbid a number of rival major labels with a cash offer in excess
of one million US dollars. Once signed, the band suffered an
insurmountable backlsh from fans and the music industry, who had
experienced unsavoury hype of this scale on previous occasions.
No Fuel Left for the Pilgrims was released to widescale
indifference, and despite huge cash injections floundered and
eventually crashed. Musically uncomfortably close to the power
shuffle of AC/DC and the Angels, D.A.D. appear to have suffocated
on their greed. Otherwise a mildly interesting outfit with a cool
line in guitar crunch.

A veritable supergroup, formed in Los Angeles from a variety of major
artists whose roots lie in several rock styles. Ted Nugent achieved
major success during the seventies as a guitarist par excellence,
singer Tommy Shaw had been a mainstay in pomp rockers Styx, again
another seventies dinosaur outfit, whilst bassist Jack Blades had
served his apprenticeship with melodic rockers Night Ranger. Only
drummer Michael Cartellone has no previous pedigree. The resultant
musical direction was surprisingly contemporary, striking a neat
balance of melodic awareness and volume-fuelled mayhem. Rather
surprisingly considering the group-members' low profile in the late
eighties, their debut album smashed into the American charts with
wondrous ease.

You can't keep a Southern man pinned to the ground. Back in the saddle
after the split of premiere Southern sizzlers, Black Oak Arkansas,
leader, main man and self-appointed washboard wizad (big) Jim Dandy is
still alive 'n' rockin'. Pistol-whippin' his way back from track to
track (with BOA guitarist Ricky Reynolds) his debut solo LP is a chilli-
fried corker of an album. And he promises more of same.

Pathetic rock from heavy-metal musicians who should've known better.
Some of the lyrics are hilarious. Cavazo (brother of Quiet Riot
guitarist Carlos) and Quadros used to be in the excellent Snow.

Incredibly inventive fusion of black funk and white rock music, creating a
melting pot of hard dance rhythms laced with stinging guitar and driving
melody. Lead vocalist Dan Reed, the focal point of this superb multicultural
amalgam, is blessed with an hypnotic delivery and tremendous stage presence.
A natural star for sure, and a man whose talent has so far been vastly
under-appreciated.
Formed in the early eighties by a nucleus of Reed and drummer Pred, both
at this time resident in Portland, Oregon, the Dan Reed Network contained
a wide selection of minority musicians from Japanese to Hawaiian. With
a rapidly growing fan following and a hot reputation in the Portland clubs,
the band released a self-financed EP titled 'Breathless'. This caught the
ear of Polygram A&R Executive Derek Shulman, who signed the band to a
worldwide deal. Their debutalbum, produced by Bruce Fairbairn, diplayed
a melting pot of styles, fusing Bon Jovi-like pop rock to the harder-edged
black funk of, say, Prince. Garnering tremendous critical approval, the
band toured extensively and cemented a reputation for being one of the best
live bands in operation, many citing Dan Reed himself as a sensational
soom-to-be star.
Slam, their second album, this time produced by Nile Rodgers, was
something of a disappointment, but again, extensive live work more than
made up for any shortcomings displayed on record. In early 1990, somewhat
tired of playing the archetype rock star, Reed shaved all his hair off,
seemingly in an effort to de-regularize his by now burgeoning star status.
With further live work in Europe during mid-1990, Reed now stands on the
verge of matching his critical success with the commercial trappings
long overdue.

DANZIG (USA)
Solo vehicle pioneered by one-time Misfits and Samhain leader Glenn
Danzig, whose creepy self-imagery and morbid fascinations have resulted
in something approaching cult appeal amongst a fanatical underground
following. Predictably hardcore or even demonic, Danzig's superior hell-
born approach (and odd 1950s-style rock 'n' roll delivery) is partially
believable, but one gets the feeling that it's all a touch too bizarre
for mass crossover acceptance.

Highly praised British metallic AOR outfit formed by vocalist and main
songwriter Darren Dean Wharton, who had been an integral part of the
final years of Thin Lizzy, contributing as a keyboard player. Following
the demise of Lizzy, Wharton set about building a new outfit and, after
several false starts including an abortive solo deal with Phonogram,
pieced together Dare with largely unknown backing musicians including
excellent guitarist Vinnie Burns. Debut album contains a superlative
selection of keyboard-orientated AOR supported by Wharton's first-class
vocal treatment. Recommended.
