The Guitar Times:你使用什么牌子的吉他？
What guitars do you play?
David Russell:在过去很长很长的一段时间内，我一直都在使用John Gilbert制作的吉他。John Gilbert是一位住在美国旧金山的制作家，他制作的吉他真是极为精彩。现在，由他的儿子接替了他的工作（后来John只制作吉他的调弦器，他的儿子William制作吉他，琴的标签上印有John William Gilbert的字样，CGV注）。
For many, many years I've been playing John Gilbert's. He is a guitar-maker from San-Francisco, and he makes fantastic guitars. Now his son is continuing the tradition.
有时，当你更换演奏用琴时你会得到一种全新的灵感，同时你会改变自己的演奏。我现在使用的吉他是由一位名叫Matias Daman的制作家制作的。他是个德国人，他制作的吉他简直是让人难以置信的好。有些东西我只能够在他制作的琴上找到，而用我其他的吉他都不能让我满意。Matias是世界上最优秀的制作家之一，我非常喜欢他制作的乐器，因此我已经用了相当长的一段时间。我感觉自己的某些发展与进步是与乐器紧密不可分的，我要感谢这些吉他，乐器的确给予了我很大的帮助。
Sometimes, when you change your guitar you get a different kind of inspiration, change your interpretation. I now use a guitar made by a man called Matías Daman. He is from Germany, and he makes fabulous guitars. Many of the things that I can get out of this guitar, I couldn't get out of my other ones. Matías is one of the most fantastic makers in the world, and I love his guitars, so I've had these for a couple of years. I feel that I've made a certain development thanks to the guitar. There are certain things I think I have improved. It has helped me.
The Guitar Times:你对制作家提出过什么特殊要求吗？
What do you ask from a guitar maker?
David Russell:这很难说，因为有许多事情实际上是下意识的，你明白我的意思吧，这是一些你自己也很难说清楚的事。你拿起一把吉他，你可能喜欢也可能不喜欢。有一些感受你是可以表达清楚的，比如有的琴很敏感，你只要用不大的力量就可以让琴发出很大的声音，我通常比较喜欢这样的吉他，原因是我的手指不是非常的强壮，我已经有了自己习惯的触弦方式。
It's difficult, because there are so many things that are subliminal, you know, it's not something you really know. You pick-up a guitar and you either like it or don't like it. Some of the things of course you can explain, but if a guitar is very responsive, that is from a small effort you get quite a lot of volume, I usually like that, because I don't have big strong fingers, I have my own natural touch.
这里我想对吉他的制作者提一个建议：如果你制作的琴容易演奏，那么演奏家就会弹奏得比较好，从而琴所发出的声音也会比较好。有些吉他的确是非常好，但是实在是太难弹了。我认为这样的吉他制作者在理念上应该有所改进。John Gilbert的吉他在这方面非常优秀，而Matias Daman制作的琴也是极其容易演奏。我认为这对于成功的吉他来说是非常重要的。
I think this would be a kind of advice for guitar makers : if you make the guitar easy to play, the guitarist will play it better... so the guitar will sound better. Some guitars are very good, but they're dogs to play. I think that's not a good idea. John Gilbert's guitars were fantastic, and Matías Daman's are so easy! I think that's an important part.
关于琴颈的形状我想是因人而异。我的手属于中等大小，因此如果琴颈过厚或是过薄，那么我的拇指和其他手指之间就会失去感觉最舒适的位置。一般情况下，普通形状和尺寸的琴颈对于我来说就很好，当然这不见得你会认为很好，每个人的手的条件是不同的。
The shape of the neck I think that's personal, we can all change, but there is a certain amount which is important. My hand is a certain size, so if the neck is either too thick or too thin, I am going to miss my best spot between my thumb and finger.
So, there is a certain shape or size that for me is good, but that doesn't mean it's going to be good for you, each of us is different.
另外这里还有一个事实，那就是我们通常所演奏的音乐，都是中等强度的，也就是说是使用中等音量。现在，我已经有了自己习惯的拨弦动作，而且目前我并不打算改变这种拨弦方式。象我这样年龄，演奏上不大可能变得更强或是更弱，因此我需要一把可以让我以平常的力量拨弦时，也能够得到足够大音量的吉他。
Then there is also another fact: most of the music, we are going to play, let's say, mezzo-forte. That's going to be our middle volume. Now, I have my natural plucking action, which is not going to change now. At my age, I can't suddenly play much stronger or much weaker, so I need a guitar which when I do my average pluck, I get enough sound.
Aniello Desiderio是一位非常优秀的演奏家，他的手指就非常强壮。他使用的吉他在他的手中能够发出极好的声音。但是换成我来演奏，则得不到足够的音量。从这一点上来看，这把吉他是很适合他而不适合我的。如果反过来，让他使用我的吉他，我想他可能并没有用足力气，但是声音已经很大了。因此，我们个人都有自己所适应的吉他，而你，也应该选择一把适合自己的琴。
Aniello Desiderio, a fantastic player, has really strong fingers. So, he has a guitar which in his hands sounds fantastic. In mine, I can't get enough sound out of it! In some ways, the guitar fits him perfectly and doesn't fit me. Maybe when he plays mine, I don't think he tried it, but perhaps it will sound too much. So, we each have our own natural stroke, and of course you need to look for a guitar that fits well with it.
对于学生来讲，更多的应该是去适应一把吉他以及其他的各种因素。但是在某些情况下，你也不得不提出这样的看法："这就是我，我要去寻找一把适合自己的吉他"，而不是一味地要改变自己去适应乐器。
A student is more able to change a bit towards one guitar or the other, but at some point you have to say : "this is me, and I have to find a guitar that fits me", rather than make me fit the guitar.
我喜欢声音清晰的吉他，而不喜欢那种声音发"肉"的琴，原因是我的音色是比较厚实丰满的，如果我还选择一把声音色彩比较暗淡的琴，那么我演奏的声音可能就过分阴沉了。
I like a guitar that is clear, I don't like it to be too muddy, because my sound is a little bit round, and if I have a guitar which is also too dark, sometimes my sound is cloudy.
Matias的吉他声音就相当暗淡，但是他的琴在清晰度上也是足够的，所以我可以使用他的乐器来完成任何我想要的东西。Gilbert吉他有些过亮了，在很长的一段时间内，我都是在一种音色比较亮的吉他上演奏出比较饱满厚实的声音。
Matias' guitar is quite dark, but it is clear enough, so I can do everything with it. The Gilbert's are more bright, and for many years I've played a bright guitar trying to make it round.
The Guitar Times:你最近完成的苏格兰音乐风格的专辑是使用Matias Daman吉他录制的吗？
Have you used Matías Daman's guitar for your Scottish music record?
David Russell:我最近的两张专辑都是使用这种吉他来录制的。一张是Rodrigo的专辑，一张是苏格兰音乐风格专辑。（两张专辑均在Telarc唱片公司录制，CGV注）。
In my last two records I have used it. Rodrigo, and the Scottish music.
The Guitar Times:你是否会根据不同的曲目使用不同的吉他？
Do you change your guitar according to the repertoire?
David Russell:不会。我一般倾向于使用一把吉他一段时间，直到我发现某些东西是我所喜欢的。好几年了，我几乎都是每年得到一把新的吉他，现在，我非常满意这把琴。
No, not really. I am going to stay with this guitar for a while, until I find something that I like better. For years, I've had a new guitar almost every year and just now I am very happy with this one.
